ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team fell to No. 5 Ohio State on senior day, 151.5-148.5, on Saturday (Jan. 21) at Canham Natatorium.
Michigan collected seven first-place finishes on the day, including four individual swimmings finishes, two from relay teams and one in diving. Wyatt Davis claimed the first Wolverine win of the meet, tying for first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 47.34.
In the next event, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Ansel Froass and Ozan Kalafat swept the 100-yard breaststroke, touching in 54.41, 54.83, and 55.22.
In the splash and dash of the 50-yard freestyle, Cam Peel and Bence Szabados capitalized off of the wall to swim their way to a first and second-place finish, swimming a 19.84 and 19.86 to pull even with the Buckeyes at the midway point of the meet.
Froass, Kalafat and Cameron Luarde swept the podium finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke, touching the wall in 1:59.87, 2:01.61, and 2:02.43.
In the 200-yard IM, Daigle and Groumi finished first and second to pull the Maize and Blue within eight points heading into the night's final race.
In the final race of the meet, the team of Nikola Acin, Szabados, Davis and Peel touched the wall first with a time of 2:54.06 in the 400-yard freestyle relay to end the meet and capture the Wolverines' sixth first-place win.
The quartet of Davis, Fitzpatrick, Peel and Gal Groumi kicked off the first event of senior day with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:26.38.
Eduardo Moraes was the fastest Michigan finisher in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing fifth with a time of 9:19.93. Eitan Ben-Shitrit and Groumi swam their way to second and third-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle, touching at 1:37.96 and 1:38.09, respectively.
Jared Daigle and Connor Hunt battled all the way through the final turn of the 200-yard butterfly to touch second and third, grabbing some big points for the Maize and Blue.
Acin and Szabados swam their way to second and third-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle, while Davis and Daigle touched second and third in the 200-yard backstroke. Moraes sped past a Buckeye to touch the wall third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:28.70.
On the diving side, Cameron Gammage nabbed the first-place finish with a score of 385.50 in the 1-meter springboard competition. He also scored 332.03 points to finish second in the 3-meter springboard competition.
The Wolverines will return to the pool on Saturday (Jan. 28) at 10 a.m. when Michigan hosts Wisconsin and Pittsburgh in Canham Natatorium.
