ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team earned pins from Cameron Amine and Mason Parris but could not overcome an early deficit in a 23-15 loss to No. 6 Ohio State on Friday evening (Jan. 27) in front of 7,900 fans at Crisler Center. It was the Wolverines' first home loss of the season and first in four years to the Buckeyes.
Amine, ranked sixth at 165 pounds, put an exclamation point on an overtime match with ninth-ranked Carson Kharchla. Still 1-1 after regulation and the two-minute sudden victory, Amine started down first in the tiebreaker and reversed the Buckeye to his back, earning a four count then the pin -- his first of the season -- at the 9:21 mark. It was Amine's second top-10 win in four matches.
Parris, who moved to No. 1 in the national heavyweight rankings this week, secured his 11th pin of the season in the third period against Hogan Swenski in the final bout. Parris scored seven takedowns in the bout, including three in the first period, and transitioned from a double leg to a leg turk to earn the fall at 6:07. Parris improved to 20-0 on the season with 14 bonus wins.
Will Lewan, ranked 10th at 157 pounds, also earned a ranked win with a 6-4 sudden-victory decision over 23rd-ranked Paddy Gallagher. He rallied from an initial deficit, scoring a first-period takedown on the edge after a lengthy video review and finished on a single leg and ensuing scramble to earn the winning takedown early in overtime.
Michigan dropped the first four matches and, for the second time in three duals, was doomed by close decisions in swing bouts with four matches decided by two points or less.
Jack Medley, ranked 20th at 125 pounds, fell 4-3 to 10th-ranked Malik Heinselman on a second-period takedown and was close on a couple chances of his own, including a dump attempt in the waning seconds of the third period. Dylan Ragusin and Cole Mattin lost at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively, on late takedowns, including an overtime score in a 3-1 sudden-victory decision by ninth-ranked Jesse Mendez in the former. Mattin scored on a first-period takedown and second-period reversal but fell to 18th-ranked Dylan D'Emilio, 7-5, on a late double leg.
Matt Finesilver, ranked eighth at 184 pounds, cut the deficit from his first meeting with fifth-ranked Kaleb Romero but couldn't score a takedown of his own in a 7-4 loss. Rylan Rogers bumped up a weight to make his collegiate dual debut in a 5-3 defeat to 21st-ranked Gavin Hoffman at 197 pounds.
Michigan (8-2, 3-2 Big Ten) will close out the weekend against Maryland at noon on Sunday (Jan. 29) at Cliff Keen Arena. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
