LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team defeated the No. 4-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers with a season-high 408.200 road score on Saturday (Feb. 4) at Nebraska's DeVaney Center.
The Wolverines (10-4, 2-0 B1G) collected three individual event titles on the night, with senior Adam Wooten (high bar), junior David Wolma (vault) and senior Virgil Watkins and junior Evgeny Siminiuc sharing the win on parallel bars.
As a team, U-M established new season-best scores on floor exercise with a 70.55 and on vault with a 72.05 mark. Michigan won floor exercise, still rings, vault, and parallel bars.
The Wolverines held a 70.55-69.70 lead after one rotation, as Wooten locked up a floor title with a 14.65. Blixt took third with a 14.30 as U-M totaled 70.55, a new season high.
On pommel horse in the second rotation, U-M slogged its way to a 63.80 after having to count a trio of falls on the pommel horse. Senior David Willett led off on the rotation and scored a 13.65 that was good for second place. Following the team total, the Wolverines fell to second place, 109.300-108.900.
The Wolverines hammered out a huge 69.150 on still rings, yet another season high, in the third rotation. Senior Javier Alfonso and Wooten tied for second with a 14.10, and the two teams sat dead even at 164.55.
From there, it was all Wolverines. On vault, U-M marked the fourth-best score in the country and a season-high 72.05. Wolma stuck his landing cold for a 14.65 and third-place effort. With two rotations to go, U-M regained the lead and led 275.55-274.25.
The Maize and Blue added to the lead in the fifth rotation, compiling a 68.75 on the parallel bars for a 278.650-276.550 lead going into the final rotation. Watkins and Siminiuc tied for the event win with matching 14.10's.
U-M closed out the vital road win with a 64.80 on high bar. Siminiuc guided U-M's team tally with a 13.80, while senior Crew Bold chipped in a 13.30 to lock up the victory.
Overall, the Maize and Blue hit 22-of-30 routines on the night (73 percent), and stuck eight routines.
Michigan continues its Big Ten road swing, traveling next to State College, Pa., to compete against the No. 6 Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday (Feb. 11) at 4 p.m.
