ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team opened the 2023 regular season with winning score of 400.600 team score, topping No. 14 Greenville and No. 15 Simpson on Saturday (Jan. 7) inside Cliff Keen Arena.
U-M (2-0) led wire-to-wire and won all six team and individual events, including the all-around. Michigan also swept the top two places in all six events individually.
Michigan began the meet on floor exercise, compiling a team score of 65.55. Freshman Landen Blixt won the event with a score of 13.80. U-M then moved to pommel horse in the second rotation. The Wolverines scored 66.20, with senior Markus Shears taking first place with a score of 14.45.
On still rings during the third rotation, the Maize and Blue extended its lead with a team score of 68.65. Senior Adam Wooten placed first in the event with a score of 14.50.
A pair of Wolverines shared individual glory in the fourth rotation on vault. Michigan won with a team score of 70.65, while sophomore David Wolma and senior Casey Cummings tied for first place with a 14.35.
In the fifth rotation, U-M compiled a team score of 62.45 on parallel bars, led by sophomore Lais Najjar and his event-best 13.95. In the final rotation, high bar, the Wolverines scored a 67.10, with freshman Fred Richard taking first place with a score of 14.55.
U-M's two strongest events of the meet were vault (70.65) and still rings (68.65). The Maize and Blue hit 23 of 30 routines on the afternoon (76 percent).
Blixt's four top-three finishes helped him secure the all-around victory with 80.400 total points. Sophomore Rithik Puri had two top-five finishes and took second in the all-around with 75.250 points.
Blixt, Richard, Eric Hoe, Zach Granados all made their Wolverine debuts on the afternoon.
Next up, Michigan travels to the annual Windy City Invitational, scheduled for next Saturday (Jan. 14), hosted by Illinois-Chicago. The event, to be held at Navy Pier in Chicago, will begin at at 7 p.m. CST.
