CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Posting the final round's second-lowest team total of 284 (-4) and a third-place showing from senior Monet Chun (208, -8), the University of Michigan women's golf team jumped three spots to finish sixth Tuesday (Oct. 10) with an 875 total at North Carolina's Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational played at the Governors Club.
Playing in its eighth trip to UNC's home event, Michigan got off to a slow start posting a first-round 297 team total, despite a season-low-tying 67 (-5) from Chun. Heading back out for the second 18 of Monday's first day of play, Chun carded a 70 (-2), while fifth-year senior Hailey Borja added a 73 (+1) and sophomore Lauren Sung's 74 (+2) yielded a 294. With a 591 36-hole total the Maize and Blue positioned itself ninth.
For a second straight tournament final round, the Wolverines rallied with their best team total. With a Sidney Yermish career-low 68 (-4), combined with Chun and Sung's closing 71s (-1), U-M posted a 284 (-4) and jumped three spots to close sixt. Last week, U-M posted a final-best 283 (-5) in at the Glass City Invitational to finish fifth.
In the end, U-M's 875 total in Chapel Hill gave the Wolverines their third straight top-seven finish at the Tar Heels' home event, with just six shots separating places three through seven in the 14-team field.
Using three sub-par tallies, Chun recorded her fourth career top-three finish as she was third in the 80-golfer field tallying a 208 (-8) total -- tying her second lowest 54-hole total. She opened with a season-low-tying 67 (-5) before totals of 70 (-2) and a 71 (-1) helped her post four straight sub-par rounds and two straight sub-par 54-hole totals.
With a 221 total after bookending rounds of 74 (+2) around a 73 (+1), Borja tied for 24th to make it three straight top 25 finishes during the fall season. Paced with their career-low 68 (-4), Yermish had a career-low 54-hole total at 223 and tied for 36th along with sophomore Sung (78-74-71), who closed with her second career sub-par total and a season-low 71 (-1).
Before heading out West for the fall final (Stanford), the Wolverines will send a trio of individuals to compete in the Chippewa Invitational, Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 16-17) in Birmingham, Mich. The two-day, 36-hole event will be played at the Birmingham Country Club.
