ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team will close out its fall season heading to Broken Arrow, Okla., Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 23-24) for Oral Roberts' the Clerico. The two-day, 54-hole (36-18) event will be played at the Cedar Ridge Country Club.
Notes
• U-M will travel the same five starters from a week ago to the Clerico. Senior Will Anderson and junior Hunter Thomson head up the starters with redshirt-junior Ben Hoagland, junior Yuqi Liu and senior Jude Kim rounding out the five.
• There will be 12 teams in the field for the Clerico, including: Arkansas-Little Rock, Michigan, Missouri State, Missouri-Kansas City, New Mexico State, Oral Roberts, Samford, South Alabama, Texas State, Texas-El Paso, Texas-San Antonio and Troy. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will travel individuals.
• U-M has three top-five finishes this fall, including wins at the Island Resort Intercollegiate (Sept. 3-4) and Virtues Intercollegiate (Sept. 25-26), in four events. The Wolverines have three sub-par totals in those top-five finishes including a season-low 830 (-34) at the Virtues.
• As a team, U-M has averaged nearly six strokes under par (282.42) with nine of 12 team tallies under par, including the last six. Michigan has produced 44-of-65 total rounds at or below par, with 29 sub-par and 15 at even. This has helped the Wolverine post 10 of 12 team totals under par, including a season-low 273 (-15) in the second round of the Island Resort Intercollegiate.
• Thomson is expected to make his 28th consecutive start for the Wolverines. He has not missed a tournament for U-M in three seasons. Anderson is set up to make his 18th straight start and 32nd of his 33-event career. Additionally, Liu has started his last 13 events for U-M, while Hoagland has started all five this season.
• Thomson has had quite a start to the fall season. Leading U-M with a 69.17 scoring average, he has posted all 12 of his season rounds at par or better -- with eight under par and seven sub-70 tallies, including a career-low 65 (-7) in the second round of the Island Resort. His remaining four rounds are all at even par.
• In addition to his scoring, Thomson has posted five straight top-20 finishes dating back to last season's tie for ninth at the Big Ten Championships. This season, he has three top-five finishes which include runner-up finishes at the Island Resort (202, -14) as well as the Everett Buick GMC Classic (207, -9). Overall, he now has four career runner-up finishes.
• With four straight sub-par 54-hole totals, Thomson is averaging 207.50 per event, nearly nine shots under par. In the season opener, he set his career-best with a 202 (-14) at the Island Resort Intercollegiate. That tally tied U-M's second-lowest 54-hole score in program history (Bill Rankin, 2008 The Maxwell). Overall, Thomson has 13 sub-par 54-hole totals in 27 career events.
• Hoagland has used six sub-par tallies to average a career-low pace of 70.92 per round, which is second among the Wolverines. He has three sub-par 54-hole totals in four events, including a new career-low 206 (-10) at the Island Resort. With a 207 (-9) total, he was part of a trio -- including teammate Liu, to earn medalist honors at the Virtue, Hoagland's first career individual win.
• Anderson has averaged a career-best 72.50 per round as seven of his 12 rounds have been at or below par, with five sub-par tallies. Liu has followed with seven tallies of par-or-better, with five sub-par to average a career-low 71.83 per round, which is nearly four shots better than any of his prior two seasons.
• Kim's medalist at the Indy at Forest Hills (Sept. 29) helped him earn his first start of the season at the Everett Buick GMC Classic. Posting an ever-par 216 total, he etched the third lowest 54-hole total of his career. Three of his four rounds this season have been at par or below, including a career-low 67 (-5) in the first round at Forest Hills.
