ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team never trailed through all 40 minutes of play on Tuesday (Nov. 14), knocking off the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, 80-39, at Crisler Center for its second win of the year.
Cameron Williams recorded Michigan's first double-double of the season in the contest, leading the team in points with 12 and adding 12 rebounds. Laila Phelia added 10 points of her own, while Lauren Hansen led the team in assists (career-high eight) and steals (two). All but one Wolverine who saw the court found the scoring column, with both Alyssa Crockett (eight points) and Whitney Sollom (six points) recording new career bests.
The Wolverines (2-0) locked Oakland down defensively to start the game, as the Golden Grizzlies (1-2) could only muster a single make in their first ten attempts. On the offensive side of the court, the Maize and Blue spread things around, with five different Michigan players contributing four or more points to an ultimate 25-6 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Despite a slow shooting start to the second half, the Wolverines built on their lead by making six of their final seven shots in the second quarter, outpacing Oakland 11-4 in the final three minutes. With seconds remaining in the half, Hansen sent her squad to the locker room with a buzzer-beating layup that pushed the lead to 43-16.
Hansen built on her end-of-half performance coming out of the locker room as she recorded five points and a steal to start the third quarter. Though the Golden Grizzlies were competitive in the early goings, the Maize and Blue forced five turnovers in five minutes to go on a 14-3 run. Greta Kampschroeder had six points in the spurt -- a pair of three-point makes.
With a 66-27 lead entering the final quarter of play, Crockett led the Wolverines in scoring and rebounding to cap things off, posting five points and four boards through the final 10 minutes. As the clock hit zero, the Maize and Blue walked off the court with a 41-point victory.
The Wolverines are back in action over the weekend (Nov. 18-20), traveling to the Bahamas to participate in the Battle 4 Atlantis. First up for U-M is Middle Tennessee on Friday (Nov. 18) at 5 p.m.Â
