ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Playing its seventh road game of the first half of the season, the University of Michigan basketball team heads to Charlotte, N.C. on Tuesday (Dec. 19) to take on Florida in the opening game of the Jumpman Invitational at the Spectrum Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with Dave O'Brien, Debbie Antonelli and Myron Medcalf on the ESPN broadcast.
Notes
• The pre-holiday event features both the men's and women's teams rotating to face each other over a three-year cycle. The original four schools who signed partnerships with Jordan Brand in both basketball and football (Florida, Michigan, North Carolina & Oklahoma) play a two-day December event in downtown Charlotte.
• In 2022 vs. North Carolina, U-M's Kobe Bufkin scored 22 points and Jett Howard had 17; however, Michigan's rally fell short as the Maize and Blue fell, 80-76, to the Tar Heels. Following a long field-goal drought in the second half, U-M was still in striking distance. Trailing by nine points late, Joey Baker and Terrance Williams II each made clutch three-pointers to cut the Tar Heel lead to just two with under two minutes to play. A floater by UNC's R.J. Davis and a series of free throws stymied U-M's comeback attempt.
• The 2023 schedule starts on Tuesday (Dec. 19) with Michigan vs. Florida (men) and North Carolina vs. Oklahoma (women) on ESPN2. Then on Wednesday (Dec. 20), the schedule features Michigan vs. Florida (women) and 9/9 North Carolina vs. 11/12 Oklahoma (men). In 2024, U-M should be scheduled to face Oklahoma.
• U-M holds a 3-1 all-time record with Florida. All four series games have been played at a neutral sites, including three at the NCAA Tournament. All three of U-M's wins against Florida have been in the NCAA's Big Dance:1988 Second Round (W, 108-85), the 2013 Elite Eight (W, 79-59) and 2019 Second Round (W, 64-49). U-M's lone loss was a 79-63 (-16) setback in the 1998 Orange Bowl Classic in Miami.
• Olivier Nkamhoua has posted 10 games with double-digit scoring and five-plus rebounds. He is averaging 16.5 points and a team-best 7.3 rebounds and had a season-best five assists against Eastern Michigan (Dec. 16). He ranks second on U-M with 32 total assists (2.9 apg).
• Tarris Reed Jr. has posted back-to-back double-figure games with a career-best 19 at Iowa (Dec. 10) and 13 against Eastern Michigan (Dec. 16). During the stretch he is 12-for-16 (75 percent) from the field. He is 8-for-10 (80 percent) on free throws in his last two games.
• In his last three straight games, Will Tschetter grabbed a career-best six rebounds. Those 18 surpass the 13 total he had in his first eight games. Additionally, Tschetter remains red-hot from deep as he is 12-for-18 from long range.
