ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team (10-3, 1-0 B1G) resumes Big Ten play on Saturday (Dec. 30), hosting No. 17-ranked Ohio State (10-2, 1-0 B1G) at Crisler Center. The game is set for noon and can be seen on FOX.
Notes
• The contest against Ohio State marks a return to Big Ten action for the Wolverines, who are 1-0 in conference play after a 36-point win at Illinois (Dec. 10). U-M will play home-and-home series with Ohio State, Michigan State, Nebraska, Rutgers and Illinois, while facing the remaining eight Big Ten teams just once.
• No. 17-ranked Ohio State is Michigan's second ranked opponent of the season after falling to then-No. 23 Ole Miss in the championship game of the Battle 4 Atlantis. U-M is 1-8 all-time against the No. 17-ranked team in the Associated Press poll.
• Michigan has enjoyed playing at Crisler Center this season, going 6-0 in home games after a 77-35 win over Florida A&M (Dec. 22). The Wolverines are averaging 82.5 points per game on 48.5 percent shooting from the floor and 43.4 percent shooting from deep. Michigan has scored at least 75 points in all six of its home games this season.
• Michigan has already had four games this season with at least 10 three-pointers, tying a school record with 14 against SIUE (Nov. 29), hitting 13 twice (at Illinois, Dec. 10; vs. Miami, Dec. 16) and putting in 10 against Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24). It is the first time since the 2017-18 season that Michigan has had multiple games with at least 10 three-pointers. U-M had three instances in that season, including a game in which Katelynn Flaherty set a school record by hitting 10 three-pointers against Penn State (Dec. 28, 2017).
• Michigan ranked 11th in the conference last season in three-pointers made, hitting just 5.9 per game on a 33.9 percent clip (5th). This season, U-M is currently sixth in the league at 8.0 three-pointers per game on 37.1 percent shooting, good for third.
• This game is the first of five Big Ten women's basketball games this season to appear on FOX, marking the second appearance for the Wolverines on the network in as many seasons.
• Michigan swept the season series from Ohio State in 2021-22, with the Buckeyes returning the favor last season.
• U-M has had 10 different players reach double figures in scoring this season. Laila Phelia leads the way with 10 double-figure scoring games, with Lauren Hansen coming in at No. 2 with eight 10-plus games.
• Michigan has a pair of double-figure scorers in Phelia (14.3) and Hansen (11.2), with Jordan Hobbs (9.1), Elissa Brett (8.2) and Taylor Williams (6.5) each averaging at least 6.0 points per game.
• A year after ranking second in the Big Ten in scoring defense (63.4 ppg), Michigan has continued to find success on the defensive end to start the 2023-24 season. U-M is second in the league scoring defense, allowing just 54.8 points per game. Michigan has held eight of its opponents under 60 points and 12 under 70 points this season.
• U-M leads the Big Ten in offensive rebounding (15.4 per game), turning those into 14.3 second-chance points per game. U-M also is third in the conference in rebounding margin at +11.0, taking advantage of the offensive rebounds and holding opponents to just 30.1 caroms per game. The Wolverines have outrebounded their opponent in all but two games, going 10-1 when grabbing more. U-M is 0-2 when being outrebounded.
