CLEMSON, S.C. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team closed out its time at Clemson's Tiger Paw Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 11), with the action highlighted by U-M's historic 4x400-meter relay race at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Complex.
Nikki Stephens, Ziyah Holman, Savannah Sutherland and Aurora Rynda set an indoor school record in the 4x400-meter relay. With a time of 3:32.46, the group smashed the previous school record of 3:36.70 - set by Lane, Harrison, Hall and Foster in 2020 – by nearly four seconds. Holman and Sutherland, who both broke the 400-meter school record yesterday, were the difference makers in the race. Holman's second leg time of 51.877 was the fastest of the group and Sutherland maintained the momentum in the third leg with a time of 51.956. Michigan finished fourth in the relay and their time ranks ninth in the NCAA and first in the Big Ten so far this season.
In the field events, Michigan saw successful marks in the shot put, with Corinne Jemison throwing a personal-best 16.09 meters (52 feet, 9.5 inches) to take sixth in the event. Theresa Mayanja set a new career best in the same contest, throwing 12.8 meters (42 feet) -- a nearly two-foot improvement on her previous best -- to finish 31st. Clare McNamara rounded out the competitive group of throwers, throwing 12.12 meters (39 feet, 9.25 inches) and taking 34th.
In a highly competitive high jump contest, freshman Gabi Newman tied with seven other athletes for 23rd place by clearing 1.64 meters (5 feet, 4.5 inches). Riley Ammenhauser, the school record-holder in the triple jump, took thirteenth in the event, leaping 12.7 meters (41 feet, 8 inches).
The Wolverines are set to host the Silverston Invitational Friday (Feb. 17) at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
