CLEMSON, S.C. / BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team closed out a two-meet weekend Saturday (Feb. 11), highlighted by success on the distance side. Michigan's distance crew competed in Boston at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, while sprints, jumps, and throws, competed at Clemson's Tiger Paw Invitational.
In Boston, graduate student Tom Brady crushed the indoor 5000-meter school record, running 13:36.61. The feat overtook the previous record (13:40.66) set by Devin Meyrer in 2021 by four seconds, and improved on Brady's previous best by twelve seconds. Brady finished 19th in the event, followed by Zach Stewart, who ran 14:13.04 to take 77th.
Brady's effort marked the second school record of the day set by the Michigan track and field programs, as the women's team set a new school record in the 4x400-meter relay earlier in the evening.
At the same meet, Nick Foster continued to dominate as he set a career-best in the mile. Running 3:56.08, Foster took eleventh, maintaining his place at the top of the Big Ten standings. The senior set his previous best just over a week ago at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational which propelled him to be named the Big Ten'sCo-Athlete of the Week. In the mile event, Ian Hill and Thomas Shilgalis also set new career-bests. Hill ran 4:06.70 to take 105th while Shilgalis ran 4:07.09 to take 112th.
U-M's distance runners continued to raise the bar, as Arjun Jha (28th, 7:55.94), Anthony Hancock (75th, 8:08.75) and Caleb Jarema (99th, 8:11.87) all set career-bests in the 3000 meters.
Further down the east coast, Michigan jumpers led the way at Clemson. Berachiah Ajala took eighth in the triple jump, clearing 15.38 meters (50 feet, 5.5 inches). He was joined by Tianhao Wei in the event, who jumped 13.93 ,meters (45 feet, 8.5 inches) ending in 22nd place.
Freshman pole vaulter Cole Sheldon saw a career-best in the unseeded section, clearing 4.82 meters (15 feet, 9.75 inches) to take seventh.
Michigan's freshman throwers made their mark in the shot put, with Zane Forist and Cade Moran taking fourteenth and seventeenth respectively. Forist threw 16.61 meters (54 feet, 6 inches) while Moran threw 16.34 meters (53 feet, 7.5 inches).
The Wolverines will return to action next week, hosting the Silverston Invitational Friday (Feb. 17) at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
