ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team rallied from an initial deficit, winning five of the final seven bouts to defeat No. 22 Indiana, 23-18, in its Big Ten dual finale on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 12) in front of 1,463 fans at Cliff Keen Arena.
The Wolverines kickstarted the rally with three consecutive bonus wins -- major decisions for Mason Parris and Jack Medley and heavyweight at 125 pounds, respectively, and a quick first-period pin for Dylan Ragusin at 133 pounds.
Parris, the nation's No. 1 heavyweight, earned his second ranked win of the weekend with an 18-4 major decision over 23rd-ranked Jacob Bullock. Parris scored five takedowns, including two apiece in the first and third periods, and added a four-point arm bar in the former. He tried for the technical fall late and scored his final takedown off a leg attack -- nearly putting Bullock on his back -- in the final 10 seconds. He improved to 24-0 on the season.
Medley, ranked 18th at 125 pounds, scored 10 takedowns, including seven in the third period, in a 24-11 major decision against Jacob Moran. He added a reversal in the second before playing catch-and-release in the third and just ran out of time on the technical fall. He finished with 2:50 in riding time.
Ragusin, ranked 12th, wasted little time in his 133-pound bout against 29th-ranked Henry Porter, finishing on a quick single and scramble before using a half and wing to stack the Hoosier wrestler at the 1:34 mark. It was his third fall this season.
Michigan also added a pair of late comeback decisions down the stretch. Pat Nolan scored six points in the final 10 seconds to earn a 9-3 win over Cayden Rooks at 141 pounds. Tied up on the edge, Rooks attempt tried to set over a whizzer, and Nolan leaned in and muscled the Hoosier to his back for the takedown and four near fall.
Will Lewan, ranked ninth at 157 pounds, won a wild one against 20th-ranked Derek Gilcher, 4-3, in the tiebreaker. Lewan was close to scoring twice on the edge in the sudden-victory period -- both times upheld on review -- but the scored remained deadlocked, 1-1, entering the tiebreaker. Lewan earned his escape after nine seconds but allowed both a locked-hands penalty and an escape within 18 seconds of the second go. Pressing the action, Lewan reached on a high crotch, then finished on a duck under with three seconds remaining to retake the lead at the buzzer.
Matt Finesilver, ranked eighth nationally, earned U-M's first win of the dual -- its only over the first three matches -- against Clayton Fielden, 6-0, at 184 pounds. He scored takedowns in the first and third periods and accumulated 1:51 in riding-time advantage for his fourth straight dual-meet win.
Michigan (10-4, 5-3 Big Ten) will close out its dual-meet slate against in-state rival Central Michigan at 5 p.m. next Sunday (Feb. 19) at Crisler Center. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
