BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A pair of first-half runs by No. 2-ranked Indiana were too much for the No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team to overcome in a 68-52 loss on Thursday evening (Feb. 16) at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
IU used a 10-0 run in the first quarter and a 12-0 run in the second quarter to build a 42-28 lead at the half. Coupled with a 7-0 IU spurt to end the third quarter, Michigan could not climb out of the hole. The Wolverines held the Hooisers off the board for more than six minutes to start the fourth quarter, scoring the first 11 points of the period, but it was not enough.
Emily Kiser led the way for Michigan with 12 points, four boards and three assists, with Leigha Brown and Jordan Hobbs each turning in nine points. Maddie Nolan had eight as the Wolverines only shot 39.6 percent (19-for-48) from the floor in the contest. U-M held a 35-30 advantage on the glass after getting outrebounded by 17 in the first contest against Indiana and held the Hoosiers to just 43.3 percent shooting (26-for-60).
Michigan grabbed a 9-8 lead when Ari Wiggins split a pair at the line at the 6:25 mark of the opening quarter, but Indiana responded with a 10-0 run spanning just more than a minute for an 18-9 Hoosier lead at the 5:08 mark to force a Michigan timeout.
Michigan responded with four straight out of the timeout behind a putback from Brown and a layup from Kiser to pull back within five, 18-13, with 3:50 left in the first quarter.
Hobbs hit her first triple of the game as the shot clock was expiring with 41 seconds remaining in the first, trimming IU's lead to 22-17 after 10 minutes of action. Â
Cameron Williams opened the second quarter with a hook shot in the lane, pulling Michigan within three at 22-19 just 28 seconds in.
Indiana countered with a 12-0 run, regaining a 34-19 lead to force Michigan's second timeout of the game with 4:38 left before the half.
Michigan slowly chipped away at the Hoosier lead, scoring five straight on another Hobbs triple and a short jumper in the lane from Kiser over the next minute and a half. U-M held Indiana without a field goal over the final 2:56 of the quarter but Indiana still grabbed a 42-28 lead at the half.
Indiana outscored Michigan, 19-9, in the third quarter after ending the frame on a 7-0 run for a 61-37 lead after 30 minutes.
Michigan held Indiana off the board for nearly the first five minutes, scoring eight straight on baskets from Nolan, Crockett and Kiser, along with free throws from Kiser. Indiana called its first timeout of the evening with 5:11 remaining as Michigan trimmed the lead to 61-54.
U-M got a stop defensively, followed by a Williams three-point play off the pass from Brown to extend the run to 11-0 to pull the Wolverines within 61-48.
Indiana's scoreless drought ended at the 3:48 mark behind a three-point play of its own, but Michigan more than doubled up the Hoosiers in the final frame, 15-7, capped by a triple from Kate Clarke in the final minute of action.
Michigan is back at home on Monday (Feb. 20), hosting Ohio State at 7 p.m.
