
Pair of Silver Medals Puts Michigan in Third After Day One of Big Ten Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No . 17-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team sits in third place after two podium finishes on the first day of the Big Ten Championships on Wednesday (Feb. 22) inside Canham Natatorium.
The quartet of Wyatt Davis, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Gal Groumi and Bence Szabados kicked off the 2023 Big Ten Championships with a second-place finish and an NCAA 'A' cut time in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing with a time of 1:23.07. The relay team finished the tightly-contested race just four one-hundredths of a second behind Big Ten champion Ohio State, but outpaced third-place finisher Indiana by over four tenths of a second.
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the team of Groumi, Eitan Ben-Shitrit, Eduardo Moraes and Davis sprinted to Michigan's second second-place finish of the night, finishing in 6:13.51 and earning an NCAA 'A' qualifying time.
The Wolverines will return to action at Canham Natatorium on Thursday (Feb. 23) at 10 a.m. for day two of the Big Ten Championships.
