ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team earned three podium finishes to help it sit in third place (403 points) after day two of the Big Ten Championships on Thursday (Feb. 23) at Canham Natatorium. Ohio State leads in the team standings with 487 points.
Gal Groumi picked up the Wolverines' first first gold of the championships, winning the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 1:41.20 to successfully defend his title and earn an NCAA 'A' cut in the process. He led from start to finish, with Eitan Ben-Shitrit finishing in bronze-medal position with a personal-best 1:43.31 for an NCAA 'B' cut and the bronze medal. Jared Daigle and Ansel Froass finished sixth and eighth, respectively. The Wolverines combined to score 114 points in the 200-yard IM.
Wyatt Davis set the 100-yard backstroke program record on the first leg of the 400-yard medley relay, finishing in 42.25 seconds and eclipsing the previous record (45.48) set by Miguel Ortiz in 2013. While the relay team was later disqualified on a false start, the time stands as the Michigan record.
On the diving side, Cameron Gammage picked up some big team points for U-M while breaking a school record. His 406.30 points on the one-meter springboard were good for a fourth-place finish and set the new program standard, besting the previous mark of 406.30 set by Jake Herremans in 2018. Kameron Liberman finished fourth in the B-final with 324.45 points.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Bence Szabados got out to a fast start and was tied for first over the opening 25 yards but snagged silver with a personal-best time of 19.05 and an NCAA 'B' cut. Cam Peel finished in fifth in 19.28 and earned an NCAA 'B' cut as well. Nikola Acin picked up an eighth-place finish in the B-final with a time of 19.84.
Eduardo Moraes was the top finisher for the Maize and Blue in the 500 free with fourth-place time of 4:17.75. In the B-final, Logan Zucker finished second, Ozan Kalafat finished fifth and Connor Hunt finished sixth. Juan Ceresa picked up points for the Wolverines in the C-final, finishing seventh in 4:27.05.
The Wolverines will continue as host of the Big Ten Championships on Friday (Feb. 24) starting with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m. inside Canham Natatorium. The action from both sessions will be streamed live on B1G+.
