LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team won session one of the Big Five Meet with a team score of 197.100 on Friday night (Feb. 24) at the Devaney Center. The Wolverines defeated No. 20 Iowa (196.925), No. 23 Illinois (196.825), Penn State (196.100) and No. 21 Maryland (194.475).
U-M took home four of the five titles. Carly Bauman notched her second career title with a career-best tying 9.950 on uneven bars, while Abby Heiskell also tied a career-high 9.950 to win the balance beam. Sierra Brooks took home a share of the floor title with a 9.925, and Natalie Wojcik won the all-around with a 39.500.
Michigan had an uncharacteristic vault rotation, scoring a 48.900. However, U-M saw bright spots in Heiskell, who led Michigan with a 9.925 and Kaylen Morgan, who earned a 9.900 in her first career appearance.
The Wolverines bounced back on the uneven bars with four straight stuck landings capped off with a Bauman's 9.950. U-M headed into the third rotation with a running score of 98.275 to tie for first overall.
Heiskell paced Michigan to a 49.450 on the beam as she tied her career-best 9.950, while both Wojcik and Wilson scored a 9.900 or higher with a 9.925 and a 9.900, respectively. The Wolverines headed into their bye rotation sitting in first with a running score of 147.725.
Coming off its bye rotation, Wojcik earned a 9.900 in the three spot to win the all-around title, while Brooks led the Wolverines with a 9.925 and Wilson scored a 9.900 to clinch the session victory.
Michigan will remain in Lincoln, Neb., as it will compete against the Cornhuskers on Monday (Feb. 27) at 6 p.m. CST at the Devaney Center. The meet will be streamed live on B1G+.
