PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan softball team split its day-two games at the Stanford Invitational, rebounding with a 2-1 win over Boise State before falling to No. 16-ranked host Stanford, 5-0, on Saturday (Feb. 25) at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium.
The Wolverines used some small ball to flip yesterday's result against the Broncos and rallied to plate two runs in the bottom of the fifth after BSU took advantage of a Michigan error to break the scoreless tie in the top half.
Senior designated player Lexi Voss banged a leadoff single off the Boise State pitcher's glove and was replaced by freshman pinch runner Indiana Langford, who stole second and advanced to third when senior third baseman Audrey LeClair looped a single into left center. Langford scored the equalizer on a wild pitch high and to the backstop; LeClair took third on the play and scored on graduate student outfielder Ellie Mataya's game-winning sac fly to deep leftfield.
Junior RHP Jessica LeBeau (4-2) struck out six Bronco batters en route to the complete-game win, allowing one unearned run on six hits and two walks.
Michigan had opportunities in its loss to the Cardinal later in the day, twice leaving a pair of runners stranded, including an incomplete rally in the seventh inning. Stanford scored two of its five runs on two separate Wolverine errors and plated two apiece in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away down the stretch.
Sophomore Lauren Derkowski (3-4) was solid despite the loss, striking out seven while allowing five runs -- three earned -- on four hits and a walk through 4.2 innings.
The Wolverines (7-7) will wrap up play at the Stanford Invitational with a 1:30 p.m. PST game against the Cardinal at Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium on Sunday (Feb. 26). The game will be streamed live on pac-12.com.
