Thompson's Offensive Work Leads Michigan Past Eastern Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team earned a decisive 16-3 victory over Eastern Michigan on Sunday (March 19) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium to improve to 4-0 at home this season.
U-M (7-4) outshot EMU 39-12 with 17 shots on goal in the victory, while winning the draw 16-6 behind seven draw-control wins from Lily Montemarano.
Offensively, Kaley Thompson dished out a career-best five assists as the point person for the offensive strike and Annabelle Burke recorded her first career hat trick. Erin Garvey, Josie Gooch and Caroline Davis combined for six goals with two each and Frances Workman added two assists.
On the defensive end, Michigan forced 17 turnovers as Maddie Burns, Mariana Lopez-Ona and Haley Polk all had two caused turnovers. In the cage, Maya Santa-Maria notched her seventh win of the season with two saves and both Erin O'Grady and Mariah Sweeney saw time in net, with Sweeney making a pair of stops.
U-M opened the scoring three minutes into the game when Thompson found Burke to light up the scoreboard for the first time. The Wolverines added back-to-back goals within a minute of each other from Garvey and Jill Smith before Thompson assisted on four straight goals including two to Davis as U-M took a 7-0 advantage into the second quarter.
The Eagles (1-5) held Michigan off until 7:28 left in the quarter when Montemarano ripped a goal off a pass from Caroline Bean and Jane Fetterolf found the back of the cage 45 seconds later to extend the Michigan lead to 9-0. The Wolverines added two final goals in the closing minutes of the first half to take an 11-0 lead and start a running clock in the second half.
Eastern found its first of three goals to start the third quarter, but Michigan answered with two of its own to go up 13-1 with 6:25 remaining in the third stanza. Each team capitalized one final time in the third quarter and Michigan took a comfortable 14-2 advantage into the final 10 minutes of action.
The Wolverines outscored Eastern 2-1 in the final quarter to earn the 16-3 victory.
Michigan returns to Big Ten action Friday (March 24) at 6 p.m. when it welcomes Rutgers to U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
