Raleigh, N.C. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team kicked off NC State's Raleigh Relays on Thursday (March 23) at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility in North Carolina. The Wolverines traveled only the distance crew this week, competing in the 1,500 meters, steeplechase and 5000 meters on day one.
Riley Flemington led Michigan in the first event of the day, the 1,500 meters, taking 25th place in a nearly 200-athlete event. Flemington's clocked a time of 3:45.88 in his collegiate outdoor debut. The freshman was joined by Ian Hill (63rd, 3:48.69), Thomas Shilgalis (68th, 3:48.84), Michael Hancock (135th, 3:53.72), John Florence (164th, 3:56.92), and Myles Liss-Riordan (166th, 3:57.19). Florence's finish was a personal best, improving on his previous best at the distance by nearly three seconds.
Jack Spamer represented Michigan in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, one of his historically stronger events. Spamer claimed 23rd place in the event, running a time of 9:10.95. This was an impressive improvement on the junior's performance at the same meet last year -- in 2022, Spamer finished in 31st.
Freshman Jack Kelke closed out the day for Michigan with the 5,000 meters. In his debut outdoor meet, Kelke finished 66th in a time of 14:56.19.
The Wolverines will continue action tomorrow (Friday, March 24) with day two of the Raleigh Relays.
