
Groumi Earns All-America Honors on Final Night of NCAA Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team finished 20th at the 2023 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday (March 25), posting 37 points across the four-day event at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
Gal Groumi was the lone Wolverine to earn All-America honors for Michigan at the championships. He swam 1:42.37 to post an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.
Groumi had to swim one extra race to make it to the A-final of the 200-yard butterfly. In the prelims, he swam a 1:41.39 and tied for eighth with a swimmer from Tennessee, which required a swim-off to see who advanced to the A-final and earn All-America status.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the quartet of Bence Szabados, Cam Peel, Nikola Acin and Wyatt Davis swam a 2:50.03 to finish 16th in the final event of the championships.
In the prelims, Michigan saw three personal-best times. In the 200-yard backstroke, Jared Daigle was the fastest in Maize and Blue with a new personal-best time of 1:41.44 to finish 24th, while Eitan Ben-Shitrit finished 30th with a new personal-best time of 1:42.12 and Davis finished 34th with a time of 1:43.18. Szabados also matched his personal-best time in the 100-yard freestyle with a 42.60 to finish 36th overall.
On the diving side, Cameron Gammage finished 36th with a score of 300.65 on the platform.
Michigan collected honorable mention All-America honors in the 800-yard freestyle relay (Groumi, Ben-Shitrit, Davis, Eduardo Moraes), 200-yard freestyle relay (Szabados, Peel, Groumi, Acin), 400-yard medley relay (Davis, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Groumi, Szabados), Daigle in the 400-yard IM and Groumi in the 100-yard butterfly.
