
Richard Named Big Ten Freshman of the Year

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Fred Richard of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, the conference announced Tuesday (March 28).
The plaudit for Richard is the seventh in program history, with Paul Juda most recently taking the honor during the 2020 season. The Stoughton, Mass., native has earned Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors twice (Feb. 27, Jan. 30), and freshman of the week three times (Feb. 27, Feb. 13, Jan. 23) in addition to four event titles with three on high bar and one on parallel bars.
He leads the Big Ten on high bar, boasting a 14.583 average, and a conference leading 14.750 -- .450 higher than teammate Adam Wooten's high mark of 14.300. Richard's all-around high score of 83.900 is knotted with Penn State's Josh Karnes for the top mark in the conference.
A member of the U.S. Senior National Team, Richard helped the No. 3-ranked Wolverines wrap up the 2023 Big Ten regular-season championship with a 3-1 record. Michigan is the top-ranked team heading into the Big Ten Championships, Friday and Saturday (March 31-April 1) in Columbus, Ohio.
