ANN ARBOR, Mich -- The University of Michigan softball team earned a decisive 9-0 five-inning victory over Oakland in a non-conference contest on Wednesday (March 29) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
The Wolverines (15-13) broke out the bats early with three home runs against Oakland through the first three innings. Junior catcher Keke Tholl belted a two-run homer just fair down the left-field line in the first, and senior third baseman Audrey LeClair extended the lead in the second with a three-run live-drive shot to right-center. Michigan pushed into run-rule territory in the third with on a two-run shot from graduate-student first baseman Melina Livingston's -- her first home run of the season -- and freshman shortstop Avery Fantucci's RBI single, both to right-center.
Oakland (6-9) threatened in the top of the third, loading the bases after a walk and a pair of hit-by-pitches, but junior right-handed pitcher Jessica LeBeau got out of the jam en route to her sixth win of the year. LeBeau (6-7) earned the win, pitching three hitless frames, striking out two and walking three.
Michigan continued to pressure in the fourth, tacking on another run to stretch its lead to 9-0 when Livingston singled through the left side, earning her third RBI of the game and scoring graduate-student outfielder Lexie Blair.
The Michigan pitching staff allowed just one hit on the day, as graduate-student RHP Hannah George replaced LeBeau in the fourth inning to close out the game. George threw two innings in relief, with two strikeouts and a walk to help secure the win.
Michigan will next travel to Lincoln for a three-game series against Nebraska. The series will begin Friday (March 31) at 5:30 p.m. CDT from Bowlin Stadium, and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
