
Amene Cracks Michigan's Top Ten on Day One of Florida Relays

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team kicked off UF's Florida Relays on Friday (March 31) at the Percy Beard Track Facility with with multiple career-best performances.
The Wolverines had a strong day in the track events, with Dubem Amene leading the way in the 200 meters. He ran 21.15 seconds, winning his heat and finishing 20th overall. Amene also posted a career best to secure a spot on the Michigan all-time top-10, earning the 10th-place position. Jacob Koerner also left the 200-meter race with a new career best under his belt. Koerner ran a time of 21.35 to take 25th.
Similar success was seen in the field events, with Eli Winter, Luke Stowasser, and Mason Mahacek earning bests in the hammer throw, high jump and javelin, respectively. Winter took seventh in the hammer throw with a career-best throw of 64.40 meters (211 feet, 3 inches). In the high jump, Stowasser also made some impressive improvements, clearing 2 meters (6 feet, 6.75 inches) to take fifth place, his best outdoor finish this season. After missing the indoor season, Mason Mahacek marked his second outdoor meet of the season with a career best in the javelin. His throw of 49.30 meters (161 feet, 9 inches), an improvement of more than three meters on his previous best of 46.22 meters (151 feet, 8 inches).
Jake Wall closed out the final event of the day with the long jump. The freshman leapt 7.29 meters (23 feet, 11 inches) to claim fourth place in an 18-athlete field.
The Wolverines will conclude the Florida Relays on Saturday (April 1) at 9 a.m., kicking things off with Zane Forist in the discus.
