
Forist Wins Discus Competition as Wolverines Close Out Florida Relays

GAINESVILLE, Fla. --  A win and career best in the discus by freshman Zane Forist highlighted day two of action at UF's Florida Relays on Saturday (April 1) as the University of Michigan men's track and field team wrapped up competition at the Percy Beard Track Facility.
Forist led the pack on the field with a win in the discus, throwing a career best 52.71 meters (172 feet, 11 inches) to take the event. His efforts rank tenth on the Michigan top-ten all time list. Forist also competed in the shot put immediately following the discus competition, taking fifth with a throw of 16.64 meters (54 feet, 7.25 inches). Aiden Felty competed in the event as well, taking fourth with a throw of 16.66 meters (54 feet, 8 inches), which was just three inches short of his career best.
Eli Winter competed in the invite discus against a competitive field of throwers. The junior took seventh in the event, heaving the discus 48.33 meters (158 feet, 6 inches). Also on the field, Henry Sheldon and Cole Sheldon competed in the pole vault. Henry took finished in a three-way tie for seventh in the event, clearing 4.98 meters (16 feet, 4 inches) on his first attempt. Cole Sheldon had a career best, also clearing 4.98 meters on his third attempt, and finished in twelfth place with just over a foot improvement on his previous best.
On the track, the Wolverines competed across three events -- the 800m, 400m, and 100m. Dubem Amene had the highest finish of the day for the track events, taking fourth in the 400 meters. His time of 46.18 ranks eighth on the Michigan all-time top-ten list. Amene was joined by Lawrence Gilliam (24th, 48.03) and Jack Juds (39th, 49.99) in the event.
Cole Johnson, Henry Johnson and Derrick Simmons represented the distance crew in the 800 meters. Both Henry and Cole ran in the second heat, holding back for a majority of the race and finishing with a final kick in the home stretch to pass multiple competitors. Cole took seventh in 1:48.80 while Henry took eleventh in 1:49.56. Simmons ran in heat four, finishing 22nd overall with a time of 1:50.58.
Jake Wall was the final competitor of the day and the only Michigan athlete racing in the 100 meters, where he took 34th with a time of 10.9.
The Wolverine distance crew will travel to North Carolina next week for the Duke Invitational (April 6-8). The meet will be held at the Morris Williams Track and Field Stadium.
