DENVER, Colo. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team scored a 198.025 in the NCAA Second Round on Friday (March 31) to lead the field at Magness Arena Friday (March 31). With the first-place finish, U-M advances to the NCAA Regional on Sunday (April 2).
Denver finished second to advance to Sunday with a 197.450, while Minnesota placed third with a 197.200 and Arizona placed fourth after posting a 196.975.
The Wolverines' 198.025 is the second-highest regional score in program history, coming just behind their 198.100 in the 2021 Regional Final. U-M also recorded a program regional-best 49.700 on floor exercise and the fourth-highest regional vault score in program history with a 49.525.
Senior Sierra Brooks won the individual floor title with a perfect 10.0 -- the first perfect score awarded for a regional individual event title since 1995 and the fourth-ever in program history. Along with Brooks, Naomi Morrison earned a share of the individual regional vault title with a 9.950 and Natalie Wojcik was the individual regional uneven bars champion with a 9.975.
Michigan started on balance beam and scored a 49.375 with a team-best 9.950 from Brooks, while Wojcik scored a 9.900 in the first rotation as U-M sat in second behind Denver, which scored a 49.600 on the floor in the first rotation.
The Wolverines came alive on floor as Nicoletta Koulos led off with a 9.925 and Abby Heiskell followed it up with a 9.950. Michigan continued to impress as Wojcik scored a 9.900 before Brooks recorded her first career perfect 10.0 on the floor. Reyna Guggino closed out the rotation with a 9.925 as U-M scored a regional-best 49.700 and moved into first place.
Wojcik started the Wolverines off strong on the vault with a 9.825 and Gabby Wilson notched a 9.925 in the second spot with a stuck landing. Morrison captured the title with a 9.950 in the third sport and Brooks notched her third 9.900 or higher of the day with a 9.900 as Michigan scored a 49.525 and took a running score of 148.600 into the final rotation.
With a comfortable lead built, Heiskell notched a 9.950 as the leadoff on the uneven bars and Wojcik anchored with a 9.975 to lock up the second-round victory as U-M scored a 198.025 to advance to the finals on Sunday.
Michigan will compete against LSU, Oregon State and Denver on Sunday (April 2) at 5:30 p.m. MST in the NCAA Regional Final, and the meet will be streamed live on ESPN+.
