DENVER, Colo. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team had its 2023 season come to a close after finishing third in a tiebreaker scenario with a 197.750 at the NCAA Regional Final on Sunday night (April 2) at Magness Arena.
Denver earned the regional title with a 197.875, while LSU and Michigan were tied with matching 197.750s and Oregon State finished with a 197.650. The NCAA postseason tiebreaker rule adds all six scores from all four events to break the tie, and LSU took the second-place finish and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals.
Michigan led the field on both the uneven bars and vault as they had high scores of 49.650 and 49.425.
U-M had a huge start on the uneven bars as it counted five scores of 9.900 or higher with Sierra Brooks, Abby Heiskell and Natalie Wojcik all earning 9.950s as Michigan went into the second rotation leading with a score of 49.650.
The Wolverines put together a 49.325 on the beam with a running score of 98.975 behind a team-best 9.950 from Brooks as it maintained the lead through two rotations in Denver.
Michigan used three scores of 9.900 or better on floor exercise to record a 49.350 as Nicoletta Koulos scored her third 9.900 of the evening and Naomi Morrison matched it, while Brooks once again led Michigan with her 9.925. Heading into the final rotation, U-M sat in a tie for first place with LSU as both teams had running scores of 148.325, while Denver was in third with a 148.250 and Oregon State rounded out the scoring with a 148.150.
Senior Gabby Wilson posted a 9.900 in the second spot for Michigan on the vault in the final rotation and Brooks recorded her fourth score of 9.900-or-better as she matched Wilson in the fourth spot for the Maize and Blue. Freshman Kaylen Morgan earned a 9.900 in the anchor position, sticking her landing and closing out the meet for Michigan.
As the final scores came in, Denver surpassed Michigan and LSU brought home a tying score to send the meet into tiebreaker rules, ending the Wolverines 2023 campaign.
Michigan will wait to find out its individual qualifiers, who will compete for individual NCAA titles in Fort Worth, Texas on Thursday, April 13.
U-M closes out its 2023 team campaign as the Big Ten champions and the Big Ten regular-season champs while having four WCGA Regular Season All-America honorees.
