GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team kicked off the Florida Relays on Friday (March 31) at the Percy Beard Track highlighted by two school records from Ziyah Holman and Savannah Sutherland.
Holman set the first school record of the day in the 200 meters, taking ninth place with a time of 23.36 seconds -- besting the previous record of 23.39 set by Richelle Webb in 1994. Sutherland followed with a school record in the 400-meter hurdles, running 55.36 to overtake the Amber Hay's 57.44, also in 2005. Sutherland was second behind Adidas athlete Anna Hall -- the 2023 indoor U.S. heptathlon national chamipion -- by less than a second. The two records follow an impressive trend of the duo's record-breaking performances this season. Holman now holds four school records, three of them set this year alone. Sutherland also holds four school records, all of which were set this season.
Also in the 400-meter hurdles, Nikki Stephens broke into the Michigan all-time top 10 with a time of 58.20. She took 10th place in the event, earning the No. 5 time in Michigan program history.
After setting a school record in the 4x100 relay at UCF's Black and Gold Invitational two weeks ago, a similar relay group ran the event again Friday, with BreeAna Bates, Aasia Laurencin, Sutherland and Hanna Hearn running. With a time of 44.85 in the 4x100 preliminary, they finished 10th by .01 seconds.
Corinne Jemison took on a competitive group in the invite discus, taking eighth place. Her best throw of 51.05 meters (167 feet, 6 inches) left her three feet behind seventh place. Also in the throws, Emma Yungerberg saw a top-10 finish in the javelin, following her first collegiate win at the Black and Gold Invitational. Her throw of 40.27 meters (132 feet, 1 inch) secured a ninth-place finish. Theresa Mayanja also competed in the javelin, taking 14th with a throw of 32.83 meters (107 feet, 8 inches).
Cate Visscher saw a successful meet in the pole vault, clearing a career-best of 3.93 meters (12 feet, 10.75 inches) to take third place. Mia Manson also competed in the event, taking seventh and clearing 3.78 meters (12 feet, 4.75 inches). The day was closed out on the field with Riley Ammenhauser in the long jump, leaping 5.88 meters (19 feet, 3.5 inches) to claim sixth in the event.
The Wolverines will continue action in Gainesville on Saturday (April 1), with day two of the Florida Relays. The meet will begin at 9 a.m., and Michigan's day kicks off at 1 p.m. with Ammenhauser and Nadia Saunders in the triple jump.
