
Wolverines Mark Season-Best Road Score in Loss at No. 1 Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics marked a new season-best road score of 410.400 on Saturday night (March 4), despite falling to the No. 1-ranked Oklahoma Sooners, who countered with a 414.550 score at OU's McCasland Field House.
Competing without the likes of freshman Fred Richard and Landen Blixt as well as reigning NCAA all-around champion Paul Juda, U-M scored a season-best road score of 410.400, besting its previous high of 407.400 by three points (at Nebraska; Feb. 4). The Wolverines also turned in season-best team scores on pommel horse (67.600) and still rings (70.500).
Michigan (10-6) earned individual event titles from junior Javier Alfonso on still rings (15.00), sophomore David Wolma on vault (14.75) and junior Evgeny Siminiuc on parallel bars (14.50). Alfonso's score ranks as the top mark in the NCAA on the event this season and represents a new career high.

The Wolverines also collected five runner-up finishes, with Alfonso placing second on floor exercise with a season-best 13.95. In addition, senior Markus Shears scored a 14.60 on pommel horse, freshman Robert Noll recorded a 13.70 on high bar and junior Chris Read collected a pair of second-place finishes with a 14.40 on vault and a 14.10 on still rings.
The powerhouse Sooners (16-2) extended their 19-year winning streak inside McCasland Fieldhouse and led the entire meet. U-M trailed by 2.4 points after the first rotation, but was unable to close the gap despite hitting 27-of-30 routines (90 percent) and sticking eight performances.
Following a bye week, U-M will return home for its final team competition of the regular season, hosting No. 6 Illinois on Saturday (March 18) inside Cliff Keen Arena. The meet has Big Ten regular-season title implications and will commence at 2:30 p.m. Big Ten Network will carry the broadcast nationally.
