
Thompson's Six Points Leads U-M Past Ohio State in Big Ten Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team opened its Big Ten Conference season with a 14-12 victory over Ohio State tonight (March 9) at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (5-3) outshot the Buckeyes (4-4), 24-21, with 21 shots on goal. U-M was led by Kaley Thompson, who had six points with three goals and three assists, while Caroline Davis, Jane Fetterolf and Erin Garvey all netted two goals each in the victory. Sophomore Jill Smith led the U-M draw with four and both Maddie Burns and Josie Gooch had three draw control wins.
Defensively, Burns had three caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Julia Schwabe had two caused turnovers and two ground balls. Junior Maya Santa-Maria made five saves on the night and Erin O'Grady made one save.
The Wolverines got out to the hot start as Gooch scored less than a minute after first draw and Schwabe extended the U-M lead to 2-0 with just over 10 minutes left in the first quarter. Ohio State evened the score for the first time in the first 10 minutes of play with two-straight goals of its own but again the Wolverines put together a pair of goals to take a 4-3 lead into the second quarter of action.
The Buckeyes scored two goals to open the second quarter before U-M went on a 4-0 run with two assists from Davis to go up 8-5 with 7:02 left in the half. Ohio State managed one final goal in the second quarter as Michigan took an 8-6 lead into the halftime break.
Michigan outshot Ohio State, 13-10, and won the draw control battle, 9-7, in the first half of play as Burns had three draw control wins for the Maize and Blue.
The Wolverines went up 10-7 on the Buckeyes before they tied it up to start the fourth quarter. Ohio State scored three straight to tie the game up at 11-11 before U-M scored back-to-back goals to take the 13-11 advantage with 7:47 left in the contest.
Both teams found one final goal as U-M earned the two-goal victory in its Big Ten Conference opener.
The Wolverines will be back in action Sunday (March 12) at noon when they take on Cincinnati at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
