
Richard Takes High Bar Title, Gymnast of the Championships; Xiao Named Coach of the Year

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team concluded competition at the Big Ten Championships on Saturday (April 1) at the Covelli Center, with freshman Fred Richard winning the high bar title. Richard was also named Big Ten Gymnast of the Championships and head coach Yuan Xiao was honored as the Big Ten's Coach of the Year for the second-straight season.
Richard's high bar victory is the 16th in program history and the second-straight for a Wolverine, as teammate Paul Juda won last the title season. His 14.725 was aided by a 6.2 start value, and he earned an execution score of 8.525.

U-M marked a trio of runner-up finishes, as freshman Landen Blixt ripped off a career-best 14.875 on vault, junior Evgeny Siminiuc scored a 14.250 on parallel bars, and senior Adam Wooten tallied a 14.575 on high bar to earn the trio of silver medals.
Senior Casey Cummings took fifth on vault (14.525), followed by sophomore David Wolma in eighth with a 13.350. Siminiuc's second-place finish on parallel bars was accompanied by a 13.600 score from junior Javier Alfonso, placing him fifth.
Senior Crew Bold took fifth on high bar with a 13.525, giving U-M three gymnasts in the top five on the apparatus.
Wooten also placed third on still rings with a 14.025, and Alfonso marked a 14.000 to take fourth on the event. Wooten also placed fifth on floor exercise with a 14.175.
Pommel horse saw Richard take fourth (13.700), while senior Markus Shears placed seventh with a 13.1000.
The results from Saturday's events placed Richard and Blixt on the All-Big Ten First Team, while Wooten, Blixt, and Siminiuc earned spots on the second team.
Blixt earned All-Big Ten second-team honors for his sixth-place finish in the all-around on Friday (March 31). Richard qualified for all six events but chose to forego competition in floor exercise, vault, and still rings.
U-M advances to the 2023 NCAA Championships with the team success, hosted April 14-15 by Penn State at Rec Hall in State College, Pa. Seeds and session groupings will be announced on Monday (April 3).
