Maize and Blue Wraps Opening Weekend With Head-to-Head Against Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan rowing program wrapped up the second day of B1G-ACC Double Dual competition at Rivanna Reservoir with head-to-head racing against No. 11 Virginia across seven events.

The potential for weather delays later in the day led to the late-week decision to move the first session of races from Saturday morning up to Friday evening (March 31), leaving one set of races for this morning. Conditions held up well, and racing went smoothly at Rivanna Reservoir.

The varsity fours raced first, and Virginia swept the three races with U-M's 1V4 (+7.8) earning the closest second-place finish.

The Wolverines were closer in the varsity eight races. The strong effort combined with better conditions led to a 4.9-second win for the Cavaliers in the 1V8, and a margin of 5.22 in the 2V8 race.

The novice eights finished out the day with a very tight finish as the U-M 2N8 crossed at 7:06.44 for a win of 0.24 seconds.

Kicking the season off with the B1G-ACC Double Dual weekend has given the Wolverines an early look at two top programs along with seeing No. 14 Ohio State in action. U-M raced better today than in Friday's races and took a step in the right direction on the weekend overall.

Both No. 12 Duke and the Buckeyes will be competing with the Wolverines next weekend (April 7-8) when U-M returns to the state of Florida for the Big Ten Invitational at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota.
