The University of Michigan men's track and field team competed in three meets across California's west coast Saturday (April 15), taking part in the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut and the Beach Invitational in Long Beach.
Bryan Clay Invitational
Michigan competed in only track events on the final day ins Azusa, starting with Lawrence Gilliam and Jack Juds in the 200 meters. Gilliam had the highest finish, taking 16th place with a time of 22.00 flat. Juds saw a new career best with a time of 22.50, finishing 86th.
Later in the day, Michigan's distance crew stole the show, running multiple career bests and coming close to the 1,500-meter Michigan record. Nick Foster, Arjun Jha, Riley Flemington, and Thomas Shilgalis competed in the elite 1,500-meter race, with Foster, Jha, and Flemington all setting career bests. Foster's time of 3:38.78 ranked fourth in Michigan program history and earned him a 14th-place finish. Jha ranked in the top of Michigan program history, running a time of 3:41.10 to claim 37th place. He was followed by Flemington in 81st (3:44.99) and Shilgalis in 114th (3:46.87).
The final event of the day for the Wolverines was the 1,500 open A, with Anthony Hancock, Ian Hill and Michael Hancock competing. Anthony Hancock took 11th in a career-best time of 3:46.86. Hill also earned a career best, running a time of 3:50.33 for 76th. With a millisecond difference, Michael Hancock took 77th, also running 3:50.33.
Mt. SAC Relays
On the track at Mt. SAC relays, Dubeme Amene took on the 400-meter elite race, running a program top-10 time of 46.20. He finished in 11th place in a competitive field of sprinters.
After throwing a career -best in the hammer throw Friday (April 14) at Beach Invitational, Eli Winter followed his performance with another impressive throw of 65.97 meters (216 feet, 5 inches) on Saturday (April 15). He finished sixth in the hammer throw competition at Mt. SAC, coming within three inches of his closest competitor.
Beach Invitational
Aiden Felty and Zane Forist represented the Wolverines in Long Beach Saturday (April 15), competing in the shot put and discus, respectively. Felty took 34th in the shot put, with a heave of 15.77 meters (51 feet, 9 inches). Forist had an impressive showing in the discus, throwing a program top-10 mark of 55.41 meters (179 feet, 11 inches). This was a new career-best for the freshman, who ended the event in eighth place.
After a busy week in California, the Wolverines will stay in Ann Arbor next weekend for the home Len Paddock Invitational. The meet will be held at the U-M Track and Field Stadium on Saturday, April 22, at 11 a.m.
