COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team battled against No. 10 Maryland before falling 13-7 in its Big Ten road contest Sunday (April 2) at SECU Stadium.
The Wolverines (9-5, 2-2 Big Ten) fought hard, tying the game once and coming within one goal in the fourth quarter before five straight goals from the Terrapins (10-3, 2-0 Big Ten) put the game on ice.
Michigan tallied 24 shots with 19 on goal. Erin Garvey had two goals and Jill Smith netted one while adding two assists. The Wolverines won eight draws with Smith earning a team-best three draw-control victories and both Maddie Burns and Jane Fetterolf grabbing two wins.
U-M forced Maryland into 13 turnovers, eight of which were caused as Mariana Lopez-Ona had three and Morgan Whitaker had two. In the cage, Maya Santa-Maria had nine saves on the day.
Maryland got out to a fast start with back-to-back goals, but U-M responded when Julia Schwabe had a nice move right outside the cage and Kaley Thompson found Caroline Davis from X to tie the game at 2 with 4:52 left in the first quarter. The Terrapins tallied their third of the game with two minutes left in the opening stanza to take a one-goal lead into the second quarter of action.
UMD put its lead back to two, but a free position goal from Smith brought Michigan back within one, 4-3, with 5:23 remaining in the first half. With just 11.5 seconds left on the clock, Maryland extended its advantage to 5-3.
Michigan put all nine of its shots on goal in the first half and had five caused turnovers, two of which came from Whitaker, while Santa-Maria made five saves.
After a Maryland goal out of the halftime break, Michigan looked to build momentum following an Annabelle Burke free-position goal. The goal led to back-to-back draw control wins and a Garvey goal to cut the Wolverines' deficit to two, 7-5, with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter.
Michigan tallied its third straight goal when Fetterolf ripped a free-position goal with one second on the shot clock. The two teams exchanged goals as Garvey opened the fourth quarter with a rocket of a shot to keep U-M within one of the Terrapins, but an unreleaseable yellow card allowed Maryland to score a pair of goals and go on to a 13-7 win.
The Wolverines will be back in action next Saturday (April 8) when they welcome Penn State for a Maize Out game at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Game time is set for noon, and the contest will be streamed live on B1G+.
