PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Highlighted by an even-par 71 from senior Anika Dy, the 43rd-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team posted a 301 first-round team tally Friday (April 21) to position itself tied for ninth with Minnesota at the 2023 Big Ten Championships being played at Fox Chapel Golf Club.
Competing in her first conference championships, Dy paced the Maize and Blue carding an even-par 71. Opening with bogeys on Nos. 3 and 9, she made the turn to the 10th tee two-over par. After a third bogey on the par-3 11th pushed her to three-over, she flipped the script, using three birdies over her next four holes to draw back to even. After a fourth bogey pushed her back to one-over, she erased it on the 18th hole with a fourth birdie to close with a 71, putting her among the top 10 -- tied for seventh and two shots back of the individual lead.
Like Dy, freshman Lauren Sung made her postseason debut and opened with a 76 to put her in a tie for 33rd. With two birdies (Nos. 2 and 12) erasing two early bogeys (Nos. 3 and 9), she stood even through her opening 14 holes. Closing five-over on her final four holes, she closed her first championship round with a 76. Defending Big Ten champion junior Monet Chun and senior Hailey Borja each opened with tallies of 77, tying them for 43rd, while senior Mikaela Schulz posted a 78 (T-57th).
Illinois' 286 (+2) opening total gave the Illini the opening-day lead with Ohio State (292) and Maryland (294) rounding out the top three. The Wolverines return for the second round on Tuesday morning (April 22) in the final wave off the ninth tee. U-M will have rotating pairings with Iowa, Penn State, Rutgers and Michigan State.
