BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team swept the 2023 WCGA Regional Coach of the Year Awards as announced Monday (April 3) by the Women's College Gymnastics Association.
Head coach Bev Plocki was named the WCGA Regional Coach of the Year for the 13th time in her career, while associate head coach Scott Sherman earned Regional Assistant Coach of the Year honors for the ninth time in his career and assistant coach Maile'ana Kanewa-Hermelyn notched regional coach of the year honors for the third time in her career.
The Michigan staff sweeps the coaching honors after leading the Wolverines to multiple program records so far this season, including a program record 49.625 on the beam two times in the 2023 campaign and tied its uneven bars record with a 49.725 at the B1G Championships.
U-M eclipsed the 198 barrier on six occasions this season, including two times at Crisler and beat No. 1 Oklahoma at home. Most recently, Michigan captured its 27th Big Ten championship as it scored just the second-ever 198 in championship history.
Individually, four Wolverines earned WCGA Regular Season All-America honors as Sierra Brooks was a three-time first-team honoree, Gabby Wilson earned first-team on vault, Natalie Wojcik was a two-time second-team honoree and Abby Heiskell earned second-team honors in the all-around to account for seven citations in the 2023 campaign.
