
Smith Earns First Team All-Region; Burns, Garvey Garner Second Team Honors

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. -- Sophomore Jill Smith earned Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association first team West/Midwest All-Region honors, while graduate student Erin Garvey and junior Maddie Burns earned second-team honors the organization announced Thursday (May 11).
Smith has been impressive all season on the attack, breaking both the U-M single-season points (70) and goals (59) record while ranking third on the team with 43 draw-control wins. The Farmington Hills, Mich., native has produced 14 multi-goal games with 13 of them hat tricks. Smith became just the fourth Michigan player to be named a Tewaaraton Nominee, was a first team All-Big Ten selection and was named USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America honorable mention.
Garvey has appeared in 16 games for the Wolverines with 15 starts in the midfield, ranking third in points with 27 on the season. She has scored 26 goals with 10 multi-goal performances and has 26 draw-control wins. The West Chester, Pa., native also earned first team All-Big Ten honors and was a USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America honorable mention honoree.
Burns has anchored the backline in all 18 games this season and leads U-M with 22 caused turnovers and 32 ground balls and also has won 44 draw controls to rank second for the team. She also was named first team All-Big Ten and was a midseason All-America honorable mention selection as well as a USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America honorable mention honoree.
The trio, along with the rest of the Michigan squad, begins its NCAA Tournament journey Friday (May 12) with a first-round matchup against Central Michigan at 2 p.m. CDT on the campus of Northwestern University.
