INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan rowing program earned a bid to the 2023 NCAA Rowing Championships, the NCAA announced on Tuesday (May 17). The Wolverines had solidified their place in the championship regatta with the team's 174-point performance at the Big Ten Championship on Sunday (May 14), earning the eighth conference title in program history.
U-M will travel to Pennsauken, New Jersey, to compete in the three-day championship regatta (May 26-28) hosted by Temple University. The event marks the first time the NCAA Championships have been held in the Garden State since 2017 (U-M finished third), and the sixth time since 2000. Races will be held on the Cooper River at the Camden County Boathouse.
In addition to U-M and the other 10 schools which received automatic bids by way of a conference championship, 11 programs earned at-large selections. U-M is one of 22 teams represented overall, and the selection is Michigan's fifteenth-straight.
Competitions include the first varsity eight, the second varsity eight, and the first varsity four races. The three boats from each school will compete for individual national titles while earning points toward the overall team championship.
U-M enters the event as the No. 11 seed in the first varsity eight. The Wolverines will be the No. 13 seed in the second varsity eight and the No. 11 seed in the first varsity four.
The team will make its way to New Jersey in the coming week to maximize training time on-site ahead of the championship races.
U-M has placed in the top five in 11 of its 22 NCAA appearances and placed in the top 10 a total of 19 times. Recent successes have seen U-M finishing on the podium, in third place (2017, '19).
The Wolverines were the national runners-up in 2001 and 2012, their highest finish ever at the NCAA Regatta. In 2012, the Michigan 2V8 boat won a national championship, aiding the team's finish.
