OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell 5-0 to Iowa on Saturday morning in a Big Ten Tournament semifinal game at Charles Schwab Field. The loss eliminated the Wolverines from the tournament and ended their season.
Michigan (28-28) got its first hit -- one of three on the day -- in the top of the first inning with a two-out single from Ted Burton, who stole second but was stranded. Brandon Mann allowed a pair of walks to Iowa in the bottom of ther frame but kept the game scoreless after one.
The Wolverines got another baserunner with two outs, this time a Dylan Stanton walk, but once again could not convert. Mann was strong in the second, pitching a 1-2-3 inning to keep the game scoreless.
Iowa (42-13) took the lead in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Eamon Horwedel came in to relieve Mann. Horwedel hit the first batter he faced to force a run home, but got a flyout to center field to limit the damage. Both teams combined for only one baserunner over the next two innings with Horwedel tallying two strikeouts in each inning. Through five innings, Iowa led 1-0 and each team had just one hit.
U-M got another two-out baserunner, but a fly out to left field ended the top of the sixth. Iowa extended its lead in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI triple off Connor O'Halloran.
The Wolverines tried to fight back in the top of the seventh with a leadoff single from Joey Velazquez. With one out, Jack Van Remortel drew a walk, but Michigan was unable to cash in as a double play ended the inning. The Hawkeyes took control of the game in the bottom of the seventh and scored three runs off three hits. John Torroella relieved O'Halloran and after walking the first batter he faced, struck out the final batter of the inning to strand two.
Michigan had its chances to come back late with a Jonathan Kim leadoff double in the eighth. He advanced to third on a Cody Jefferis sacrifice fly, but was unable to score. U-M had two runners on with no outs in the ninth, but three straight strikeouts ended the Wolverines' season.
The Wolverines finished year one under head coach Tracy Smith with 28-28 overall record and a sixth-place finish in the Big Ten standings. O'Halloran was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and first team All-Big Ten, while Burton and Kim were named third team All-Big Ten.
