ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan track and field assistant coach Steven Rajewsky was named Great Lakes Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the organization announced Thursday (June 15) following the completion of the 2022-2023 outdoor season.
Coaching sprints and hurdles, Rajewsky helped lead the team to a sweep of this season's Big Ten indoor and outdoor championships, with his athletes contributing 58 of U-M's 139 points at the outdoor championships. Three of Rajewsky's athletes were Big Ten Champions (Ziyah Holman, 400 meters; Savannah Sutherland, 400-meter hurdles; and Aasia Laurencin, 100-meter hurdles) and four athletes and two relays qualified for NCAA East Preliminary rounds.
Most recently, he coached Sutherland to an NCAA Championships title in the 400-meter hurdles -- the program's first in the event. Her time of 54.45 seconds is a U23 Canadian Record, school record, world standard and the No. 10 mark in the world this year.
Rajewsky coached a total of three women to first team All-America honors at the NCAA Championships in Sutherland, Holman (400m) and Laurencin (100-meter hurdles). Holman's championship performance included a school record and world number 19 mark in the 400 meters with a time of 50.40. Rajewsky's 4x400 relay team earned second team All-America honors, and his athletes are responsible for school records in five events (200m, 400m, 400mH, 4x100m, 4x400m).
Rajewsky also was named Great Lakes Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year following the 2023 indoor season.
