PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- With a 300 72-hole championship total, University of Michigan women's golf senior Monet Chun tied for 59th at the 2023 U.S. Women's Open Championship today (Sunday, July 9) played at the legendary Pebble Beach Resort.
Competing as one of 28 amateurs, Chun was among four non-professionals advancing to weekend play, along with Benedetta Moresco (Alabama; 296, t-34th), Áine Donegan (LSU; 297, t-46th) and Amari Avery (USC; 298, t-48th). Chun was the first U-M golfer to compete in the U.S. Women's Open as an amateur and just the second golfer in program history as she joined the exclusive list with former U-M legend Elaine Crosby, who made 11 trips to the LPGA major.
Paired with professionals Grace Kim (Australia) and Bronte Law (England) for the first two rounds, Chun birdied two of the four par 5s and added a third along with 11 pars to open her first major round with a 74 (+2). After an opening bogey to start her second round, Chun used a pair of birdies (Nos. 3 & 7) and 13 pars, including a stretch run of nine straight, to etch a 73 (+1).
With her 147 (+3) total and positioned tied for 26th, Chun was well above the cutline (+6) to become the first Wolverine in 28 years (1995, Crosby) and first U-M amateur to advance to the weekend at the U.S. Open.
Heading into the weekend's third round, Chun was able to eliminate two front side bogeys with a pair of birdies (Nos. 2 & 7). With a third birdie on the 10th, she was one-under through 11 holes. Drawing even with a bogey on the 13th hole, she closed three-over in her final five holes to post a 76 (+4) and move into a tie for 45th (223).
With 10 pars and two more birdies in her final round, she posted a closing 77 to give her a 300 championship total and tie for a 59th place finish.
The U.S. Women's Open invitation continues a stellar two years of play for Chun. Her individual title at the 2022 Big Ten Championships paced the Wolverines to their first-ever conference crown. After the collegiate season, Chun won the 2022 Canadian Women's Amateur and earned an invitation to the 2022 U.S. Women's Amateur. In an incredible run, Chun was the runner-up at the prestigious amateur event, which earned her an invite to the 2023 US Women's Open.
Earning All-Big Ten honors for a third straight year at Michigan this past season, Chun posted a career-low 73.14 scoring average. During her collegiate season, she was invited to the 2023 Augusta National Women's Amateur.
Chun was the third Wolverine selected for the world-renowned national amateur event, joining current teammate Hailey Borja and former teammate and Epson Tour professional Ashley Lau, who played in the 2022 event. Chun advanced out of 36-hole cut to play the final round on Augusta National, where she finished tied for 14th (75-69-77/219).
