ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced Thursday (Aug. 10) that Zara Collisson of the University of Michigan is one of 11 nominees selected by the CRCA Awards Committee to receive the Athlete of the Year Award for the 2023 season.
Now in its second year, the Athlete of the Year award allows the CRCA to acknowledge and recognize the individual efforts, impactful actions and remarkable outcomes achieved over the academic year. Candidates are nominated by their head coaches.
These athletes not only contributed to their teams' successes, but they also embody the essence of being a top performer in a sport where individual recognition is so rare.
"Zara stands out as an outstanding candidate for the CRCA Athlete of the Year due to her exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to her sport. Leading by example, her work ethic, grit and drive to succeed serve as a contagious source of inspiration for her teammates," said the release.
Collisson is U-M's first nominee for the CRCA Athlete of the Year award. She is one of five nominees at the Division I level (three each in Divisions II and III). A first team All-American this season, Collisson has been a presence in U-M's first eight her whole career and rowed from the fourth and sixth seats this spring.
An international record-holder (U-23 world championships) and gold medalist this past summer (Australian 4+), the Aussie brought her best this year to help bring the speed out of the Michigan 1V8 on its way to a gold medal at the Big Ten Championships. She is a two-time Big Ten gold medalist (2021 2V8, '23 1V8).
