ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Graduate student Moshtaba Al-Hasnawi scored the first goal of the season for the University of Michigan men's soccer team on Thursday (Aug. 26) as the Wolverines opened the 2023 campaign with a 1-1 tie against Loyola Marymount at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Lions (0-0-1) were the first on the scoreboard in the second half before Al-Hasnawi found the equalizer in the 65th minute of action off a corner kick. Junior Charlie Lawrence and freshman Duilio Herrera earned the assists on the goal.
Michigan (0-0-1) outshot LMU 8-5 in the second half of play and put three shots on goal in the 90-minute contest. In total, nine newcomers saw action for the first time with the Maize and Blue.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair between the two squads with Michigan's best chance coming from senior Quin Rogers in the 16th minute of action, but his shot sailed wide of the right goal post.
The Lions came out of the halftime break and quickly lit up the scoreboard with a goal in the 48th minute to take a 1-0 advantage before Michigan saw back-to-back opportunities on corner kicks but was unable to find the back of the net.
The Wolverines continued to find chances as Matthew Fisher's shot went over the crossbar in the 60th minute of action at U-M Soccer Stadium, and U-M continued to knock on the door as it earned its third corner kick of the game in the 65th minute. Lawrence set up the field and served the ball into the box off the foot of Herrera, who did a quick on-tap touch out to Al-Hasnawi outside the 18-yard box. Al-Hasnawi gathered the ball at his feet and ripped a left-footed scorcher through traffic into the bottom left corner to tie the match at 1-1.
Michigan and LMU both looked for the decider in the final 15 minutes of play, which included a pair of tremendous shots from Rogers that were saved by the Lions' keeper in the 82nd minute. With only seconds left on the clock, a potential game-winner from the Lions was waved off by the referee after LMU was called offsides, and the teams ended the contest in a 1-1 tie.
The Wolverines conclude their 2023 opening weekend on Sunday (Aug. 27) when they host Cal Baptist at 1 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. The game is set to be featured on B1G+.
