ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team fought to a 1-1 tie against No. 9 Akron in front of 2,000 fans Friday night (Sept. 1) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines (1-0-2) went down to 10 players with 30 minutes remaining in the match following a second yellow card and were able to stave off a late Akron (2-0-1) attack to earn the tie. Senior Quin Rogers scored U-M's goal in the first half off a penalty kick that was earned by freshman Joao Paulo Ramos when he was taken down in the box.
The Michigan defense settled in for the final 30 minutes warding off five late shots from the the top-10 ranked Zips.
Michigan put the pressure on out of the gate as Charlie Lawrence fired a shot on goal in the first two minutes of action and had an early chance called back due to being offsides.
The Wolverines continued to set the tempo as Ramos drew a foul inside the 18-yard box and Michigan was awarded a penalty kick in the 39th minute of play. Rogers lined up for the kick and fired the ball into the back of the net to give U-M the 1-0 edge heading into the halftime break.
Going down to 10 players after a second yellow card, a short pass from the keeper proved costly for the Maize and Blue as the ball was picked off and went off the inside of the left goal post to knot the score at 1-1 in the 69th minute.
The Michigan defense settled in and held off the Zips for the final 20 minutes to notch the draw.
The Wolverines will hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to Bowling Green on Monday (Sept. 5) for a Labor Day contest at 3 p.m. at Cochrane Soccer Stadium
