Borja's Top-10 Finish Paces U-M in Season Opener at Mary Fossum

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- With Hailey Borja collecting her 15th career top-10 individual finish, she paced the University of Michigan women's golf team to a season-opening 10th-place showing after an 899 54-hole total at the Mary Fossum Invitational at MSU's Forest Akers, West Course.
Returning for a fifth year, Borja led the Wolverines in her 40th consecutive start for the Maize and Blue. Using five birdies in her opening 18 holes, she carded her 30th career sub-par round and 14th sub-70 after posting a 69 (-3) on the leaderboard. With 15 pars, she followed with a second-round 76 and positioned herself tied for ninth after 36 holes (145, +1). With three more birdies in the final round, she closed with a 73 (+1) and posted her 15th career top-10 finish with her 218 (+2) total.
Behind Borja, U-M coach Jan Dowling had three rookies in the starting five, who all made their collegiate debuts in East Lansing. After redshirting last season, Mara Janess earned the starting nod, she led the rookie trio tying for 40th after a 227 (74-78-75) total. Freshmen Sidney Yermish tied for 49th (229) and Grace Wang tied for 70th (236) in their first college start.
Rounding out the starting five, Monet Chun (76-76-77) shared the 49th spot with Janess after she tallied a 229 total in the opener. Additionally, Sydney Sung played as an individual and etched her second lowest 54-hole total of her young career with a 226 (77-75-74).
The Wolverines will stay close to campus as they head down US-23 to nearby Toledo to play in the Rocket's Glass City Invitational, Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 25-26. The two-day, 54-hole event will be played at the prestigious Inverness Club.
During the first day of play, Toledo will set up a YouTube link with live footage from one hole at approximately noon, weather permitting. The final round will be on ESPN+ covering the final 3-4 holes from approximately 12-3 p.m.Â
