ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team heads down US-23 to Toledo for the Rockets Glass City Invitational, Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 25-26) from the prestigious Inverness Club. With a loaded 11-team field, U-M will play 54-holes (36-18) over the two-day format.
Notes
• During the first day of play at the Glass City Invitational, Toledo will have a YouTube link with live footage from holes 12 and 18 hole at approximately noon, weather permitting (no announcers). The final round will be on ESPN+ and stream coverage of holes 12, 15, 16 and 18 from approximately 12-3 p.m.
• There will be 11 teams among the field for the Glass City Invitational including: Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kent State, Miami (Fla.), Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, South Florida, Toledo and Virginia.
• U-M will travel five starters and two individuals for the Glass City Invitational. The Wolverine starting five will be headed up by fifth-year senior Hailey Borja, redshirt-freshman Mara Janess and senior Monet Chun. Freshman Sidney Yermish and graduate transfer Emilie Paltrinieri round off the U-M's five. Sophomore Lauren Sung and freshman Grace Wang will travel, and play, as individuals.
• Michigan returns to Toledo's home event for the first time in four years. In the 2019 event, U-M used three top-10 finishes -- Sophia Trombetta (third), Hailey Borja (t4th) and Hannah Ghelfi (t9th) -- to earn a runner-up finish at the Inverness Club. Michigan used surrounding sub-par 287s (-1) around a 300 to post an 874 total.
• Borja is the lone Wolverine on the roster to have played in U-M's last trip to Toledo. In her collegiate debut, she started with a career-low 71 (-1) and followed with a 72 (E). A couple of missed putts led to a closing 74, but her 217 (+1) tally gave her a fourth-place finish -- the best freshman finish for a U-M women's golfer since 1995 when Sharon Park was fifth at the Spartan Invitational (Sept. 16-17).
• Borja opened her fifth season for U-M pacing the Wolverines with her 13th career top-10 finish after tying for ninth at the Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 17-18). With her 12th career sub-70 round (69, -3) in the first round, she tallied a season-opening 218 (+2) 54-hole total.
• After redshirting last season, Mara Janess made her collegiate debut and first career start at the Mary Fossum Invitational. She fired a career-low 74 (+2) in her opening round as she closed with a 227 total to tie for 40th. She was one of three Wolverines to make their debut in East Lansing -- freshmen Sidney Yermish (t-49th; 229) and Grace Wang (t-70th; 236).
• Sophomore Sydney Sung opened her season as an individual and posted the second-lowest 54-hole total of her young career. With her 226 (+10) total she tied for 40th at the Mary Fossum Invitational. She was three shots off her career-low of 223 tallied at the 2023 NCAA Westfield Regional (May 8-10).
• Borja and Mikaela Schulz are utilizing the NCAA's COVID-19 season of competition waiver which grants them an additional year of eligibility with the Wolverines. Borja has played in 40 straight career events and carries a 73.26 scoring average while Schulz has 32 events under belt with a 75.72 career average.
• U-M also welcomed a third veteran as Emilie Paltrinieri is the program's first graduate transfer. The Milan, Italy native spent the last four years with the UCLA Bruins, starting 26 of her 31 events and helping them reach three straight NCAA regionals (2021, '22, '23) and advance to the NCAA Finals twice (2021, '22).
• Playing in her ninth career USGA event and fourth U.S. Women's Amateur, Borja reached the semifinals for the first time in her career having never gotten passed the Sweet 16. Additionally, by reaching the Final Four, she helped U-M have a Wolverine in the semifinal for a second-straight year. In 2022 at Chambers Bay, Monet Chun reached the semifinal and finished as the runner-up at the prestigious amateur championship.
• This summer, Lauren Sung won the Pacific Northwest Women's Amateur and followed with a runner-up finish at the California Women's Amateur. She finished with a 9-1 match play record over her last two match-play events. As a freshman, she started nine of 10 events and carried a 75.86 scoring average.
