ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Highlighted by an early-January trip to square off with Penn State at the famed Palestra in Philadelphia, Pa., the University of Michigan men's basketball team, along with the Big Ten Conference, released its dates and opponent designations Tuesday (Sept. 19) for the Wolverines' 20-game conference regular-season slate for 2023-24.
Expanding the conference slate to 20 games six seasons ago, the Wolverines will open with their lone regular-season meeting with Indiana on Tuesday, Dec. 5. U-M will look to snap its three-game losing streak to the Hoosiers -- all by less than a 2.5-point average. U-M wraps up its early Big Ten preview five days later heading to Iowa on Sunday, Dec. 10 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Since the early conference games (2017-18 season) began, the Maize and Blue hold a 6-3 record.
With the turn of the New Year, the Wolverines will restart Big Ten play by hosting Minnesota on Thursday, Jan. 4 in their only regular-season game before heading to downtown Philadelphia to play Penn State at one of the most storied sporting venues in the country -- The Palestra.
Opened in 1927, The Palestra is the oldest major college arena -- and home to Penn -- still in use today. It has hosted more games, more visiting teams and more NCAA Tournaments than any other facility. The neutral-site contest is the lone matchup against the Nittany Lions and new head coach Mike Rhoades.
After U-M's only meeting with Maryland on Thursday, Jan. 11 at the Xfinity Center, U-M will begin a stretch of three of four games in Ann Arbor -- Ohio State (Jan. 15) on MLK Day, Illinois (Jan. 18) and Iowa (Jan. 27). The lone away game during the two-week stretch will be at Purdue (Jan. 23).
For its rivalry game with Michigan State, the series begins in East Lansing at the Breslin Center on Tuesday, Jan. 30 before the Spartans head to Ann Arbor on Saturday, Feb. 17.
With early February home games against Rutgers (Feb. 3) and the lone game with Wisconsin (Feb. 7), U-M finds itself with five of its final eight games away from Crisler Center. The regular season will close with a home contest against Nebraska (March 10).
The 2024 Big Ten Tournament heads to Minneapolis, Minn., and the Target Center -- home of the Minnesota Timberwolves. First-round action begins on Monday, March 13 with the champion crowned on Selection Sunday (March 17).
The Maize and Blue has had at least 10 Big Ten wins in each of the last eight seasons, as well as 11 over its last 12. Overall, the Wolverines have had 37 10-plus win seasons and 15 league titles, with the last coming in 2021.
While season tickets are sold out, single-game tickets go on sale in early October. Starting Tuesday (Oct. 10), donors to Michigan Athletics with 500+ priority points will get access to ticket sales.
The following day, Wednesday (Oct. 11), sales will open for donors with fewer than 500 priority. On Thursday (Oct. 12), U-M will open its Digital Day for single-game tickets.
Be sure to fill out the ticket interest form to be notified when tickets go on sale and to receive other information about the team throughout the season.
