COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team earned five bonus wins, including pins from Cameron Amine and Lucas Davison, to cruise to a 38-3 win at Maryland in its Big Ten Conference dual opener on Friday night (Jan. 12) at the Terrapins' XFINITY Center.
The Wolverines were nearly back to full strength after missing several starters last week and claimed nine of 10 bouts, including each of the first seven, for the third straight meeting against Maryland.
Amine, ranked fifth at 165 pounds by InterMat, returned after battling illness last week and made quick work of the Terps' Ryan Money with a first-period fall at 2:17. Amine used a bodylock to toss Money to his back for seven points and, after Money got back to his feet, returned him again to his back to secure the pin -- his first of the season.
Davison, ranked fourth nationally at heavyweight, collected his second fall of the season at the 3:32 mark against Jordan Gabriel. Davison struck first on a first-period single leg and rode out the frame, earning a one count, but no more, on a last-second leg turk. He locked up a cradle off a mat return early in the second period and promptly and pinned Gabriel. Davison improved to 8-1 on the season with seven bonus wins; he is a perfect 4-0 in duals.
Dylan Ragusin, who came out of redshirt to make his season dual debut at 133 pounds, kicked off the dual with a 5-1 decision over 19th-ranked Braxton Brown. Ragusin was the aggressor throughout but could not capitalize on several early scrambles until breaking through with a go-behind takedown early in the second period. He rode out the entirety of the third to finish with 2:09 in time advantage and improved to 15-0 on the season. It was his third straight ranked win.
Sergio Lemley, like Davison, improved to 4-0 in dual action with a dominant 19-4 technical fall over fellow freshman Dario Lemus at 141 pounds. Lemley, ranked 26th nationally, scored six takedowns, including four in the first period off a combination of single legs and go behinds. He added two more in the second, including a single leg to end the bout at the 4:18 mark.
Austin Gomez, ranked eighth at 149 pounds, earned his second straight ranked win in the Wolverines' starting lineup, scoring early and late to beat 17th-ranked Ethen Miller, 10-6. Gomez went big in the first period, throwing Miller to his back for seven points and, after the Terp narrowed the score with a late takedown in the first, got it back with a slick single leg early in the third period.
Zack Mattin picked up a ranked win at 157 pounds, using a strong ride to defeat 32nd-ranked Michael North, 6-0, for his first-ever collegiate dual win. Mattin finished on a first-period single leg and rode out the frame and, after getting ridden in the second, responded in kind in the third, riding out the entire frame to finish with 1:53 in time advantage and tacking on a pair of late back points off a claw ride tilt.
Amine's pin sent the Wolverines rolling into the intermission break, and Shane Griffith kept it up on the other side, cruising to an 11-2 major decision over Gaven Bell at 174 pounds. Griffith, ranked fourth nationally, scored on takedowns in the first and second periods then added a pair of reversals, including one early in the third to then ride out the bout and earn 2:05 in time advantage. He is also 4-0 in duals this season.
Jaden Bullock, ranked 15th at 184 pounds, earned a 5-1 decision over Chase Mielnik with a double-leg takedown in the first period and 2:14 in riding-time advantage. The Terrapins earned their lone win in the subsequent at 197 pounds, where fifth-ranked Jaxon Smith edged 29th-ranked Bobby Striggow, 5-2, on a first-period single leg. Striggow pushed the action late and earned a stall warning but Smith stalemated several positions late.
Davison answered with his second-period pin, and Michael DeAugustino put an exclamation point on the dual with a 20-5 technical fall over Tommy Capul in the final bout -- and his return to the lineup -- at 125 pounds. DeAugustino scored five takedowns -- two apiece in the first and third periods -- and added a three-point tilt late in the first. He ended the bout with a slick single leg on the edge at the 6:34 mark.
The Wolverines (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) kick off their home slate against in-state rival Michigan State at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 14) at Crisler Center. Tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office, while the dual will be streamed live on B1G+.
