ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed seven bouts, earning bonus points in four, to roll to a 29-12 win over in-state rival Michigan State in its home opener on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 14) in front of 3,936 fans at Crisler Center.
Five Wolverines earned wins in their first time wrestling in front of a Michigan home crowd, including Austin Gomez, who earned a first-period fall at 149 pounds, while Shane Griffith and Lucas Davison also earned bonus points at 174 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.
Gomez, ranked eighth nationally by InterMat, improved to a 3-0 in a Michigan singlet with a quick fall against Braden Stauffenberg at the 1:59 mark. Gomez scored three takedowns in the shortened bout -- twice off throws -- and used a hip toss to secure the fall.
Griffith and Davison both went after and finished on late takedowns to collect extra points. Griffith, ranked fourth at 174 pounds, earned a 9-1 major decision over D.J. Shannon with two takedowns and 2:53 in riding-time advantage. He kicked Shannon loose late in the third and finished on a single leg with 12 seconds remaining to earn his second bonus win on the weekend and improve to 5-0 in dual action.
Davison, ranked fourth nationally at heavyweight, cruised to a 19-3 technical fall over Josh Terrill with five takedowns, including three in the third period. Needing a takedown for the tech, Davison shot in on a double leg off a restart with eight seconds left, lifted it high and finished with just three seconds left on the clock. Time expired to earn him the riding-time point (1:53). He improved to 9-1 on the season, including a 5-0 dual mark, with eight bonus wins.
Dylan Ragusin also earned a technical fall at 133 pounds, kicking off the dual with a dominant 19-4 win over Andy Hampton in just 2:33. He scored on five takedowns in the first period and added a four-point tilt to end the bout early. It was his second win back in the starting lineup on the weekend; he improved to 16-0 on the season.
Sergio Lemley and Michael DeAugustino also earned decision wins in their Crisler Center debuts against ranked opponents at 141 and 125 pounds, respectively. Lemey, ranked 26th nationally, broke a deadlocked match with a late point off a double leg with the arm trapped in the final 15 seconds to edge 33rd-ranked Jordan Hamdan 4-1 and stay perfect (5-0) in duals this season.
DeAugustino, ranked third at 125 pounds, earned a 7-3 decision over 32nd-ranked Tristan Lujan with two takedowns -- a single leg in the first and a late go-behind to ice it in the third period. He is 6-1 on the season and 3-0 in duals.
Jaden Bullock rounded out the Wolverines' winners with an 8-4 decision over 23rd-ranked Layne Malczewski at 184 pounds. Bullock, ranked 15th, took the lead with a first-period single-leg takedown and, after traded reversals in the second, iced it with a late double leg in the waning seconds of the third. Bullock owns six ranked wins on the season.
The Wolverines (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) will remain at home next weekend to host a pair of Big Ten Conference duals at Crisler Center. Michigan will welcome top-ranked Penn State on Friday (Jan. 19) at 6 p.m. before hosting Rutgers on Sunday (Jan. 21) at 1 p.m.. Tickets are still available for both duals through the U-M Ticket Office.
