ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior/junior Dylan Ragusin earned an overtime fall at 133 pounds as the No. 11-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team dropped its first Big Ten Conference dual of the season in a 27-9 defeat to top-ranked Penn State on Friday night (Jan. 19) in front of 6,522 fans at Crisler Center.
Ragusin, ranked sixth at 133 pounds in the latest InterMat poll, won a wild one against fourth-ranked Aaron Nagao, earning his first fall of the season at the 7:28 mark in sudden victory after scrambling out of single-leg attack to put Nagao into neutral danger then get his shoulder blades flat. The wrestlers traded several flurries and takedowns in the first period, with Ragusin scoring on a single leg before riding out the second period, earning 1:51 in time advantage though giving up a late locker-hands called. Ragusin improved to 17-0 on the season and boasts 11 bonus wins.
Graduate student Shane Griffith, ranked fourth at 174 pounds, also won for the Wolverines with a 2-1 decision over Terrell Barraclough. Griffith earned a reversal late in the second period and made it hold up to stay unbeaten (6-0) in duals this season.
The Wolverines dropped decisions in six bouts, including three decided by a takedown or less against top-five opposition.
Graduate student Will Lewan, ranked ninth at 157 pounds, was deadlocked late in the third against No. 1 Levi Haines at the opening weight class when he was hit with a second stall warning with just 17 seconds remaining to decide the bout. It was Lewan's first match in more than a month after time off due to illness.
Senior/junior Jaden Bullock, ranked 15th at 184 pounds, fell to fifth-ranked Bernie Truax, 4-1, after a late PSU takedown in the third period. After a scoreless first period, both wrestlers had takedowns on the edge awarded and waved off in the second period -- Truax's on video review, Bullock's without. The Wolverine's escape early in the third period evened the score, but Truax finished on an ankle pick with 30 seconds left in the bout.
Freshman Sergio Lemley, ranked 25th at 141 pounds, rallied to even the score in the third before falling to second-ranked Beau Bartlett, 7-5, for his first dual loss of the season. After giving up a takedown in the first period, Lemley rode off most of Bartlett's time advantage in the second before tying up the score at 4-4 with a single-leg takedown midway through the third period. He gave up a locked-hands call and a reversal in the same sequence moments later and, after escaping, pushed the pace over the last 30 seconds but ran out of time.
Graduate students Lucas Davison and Michael DeAugustino also dropped their first dual losses of the season. Davison, ranked fourth at heavyweight, fell to top-ranked Greg Kerkvliet, 8-3, on takedowns in the first and second periods. DeAugustino, ranked fifth at 125 pounds, fell to Braeden Davis, 5-1. The Nittany Lion escaped with 1:00 of riding time in the third to hold the tiebreaker and force DeAugustino to push late and iced it with a counter takedown in the final 10 seconds.
The Wolverines (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) will wrap up their weekend homestand against No. 13 Rutgers at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 21) at Crisler Center. Tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office.
