ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) will remain at home next weekend to host a pair of Big Ten Conference duals at Crisler Center. Michigan will welcome No. 1 Penn State (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) on Friday (Jan. 19) at 6 p.m. before hosting No. 13 Rutgers (9-1, 2-0 Big Ten) on Sunday (Jan. 21) at 1 p.m.
Notes
• The Wolverines are 4-1 in duals after kicking off the Big Ten slate with lopsided wins over Maryland (38-3, Jan. 12) and Michigan State (29-12, Jan. 14). Three Wolverines boast perfect 5-0 dual records: Sergio Lemley (141 pounds), Shane Griffith (174) and Lucas Davison (Hwt), while Michael DeAugustino (125) and Austin Gomez (149) are 3-0 and Dylan Ragusin (133) and Will Lewan (157) are 2-0 in duals.
• Michigan has posted a 17-5 Big Ten dual record over the last three seasons, finishing top five in the dual standings all three seasons, including a runner-up finish in 2022 -- the same year U-M captured the conference tournament title.
• Senior/junior Dylan Ragusin came out of redshirt last week and went 2-0 in his first dual action of the season, earning a ranked win over Maryland's 19th-ranked Braxton Brown and a dominant 19-4, first-period technical fall against Michigan State's Andy Hampton. He is 16-0 on the season after capturing three tournament titles while in redshirt, including the Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30), where he defeated Rutgers' Dylan Shawver 4-1 in the championship final.
• Graduate students Shane Griffith and Lucas Davison earned a pair of bonus wins last weekend to stay unbeaten in dual action. Griffith claimed 11-2 major decisions in both matches, while Davison earned a fall against Maryland and a technical fall against MSU. Griffith owns an 8-2 record with five bonus wins, and Davison is 9-1 with eight bonus wins, including four technical falls.
• Davison's 19-3 technical fall against Michigan State's Josh Terrill, which he iced with double-leg takedown in the final five seconds, marked the 100th win of his collegiate career. He improved to 100-32 -- and 62-16 over his last three seasons at heavyweight. Graduate student Will Lewan also is nearing the century mark with a 89-32 career record. The most Michigan wrestlers to reach the milestone were Mason Parris and Matt Finesilver, who finished their collegiate careers last season with records of 124-18 and 107-35, respectively.
• Griffith earned a top-five win -- and his best since joining the Wolverines last summer -- with a 4-1 overtime decision over South Dakota State's fourth-ranked Cade DeVos. Griffith fought off an SDSU single-leg attack over the final seconds of regulation then finished on one of his one about 30 seconds into the sudden-victory period. Griffith is 6-2 at 174 pounds and now ranked as high as No. 3 nationally.
• Graduate student Austin Gomez is 3-0 since joining the Wolverines in December as a transfer -- and after relocating to Ann Arbor last summer as a member of the Cliff Keen Wrestling Club. He earned his first fall, at 1:58 against Michigan State's Braden Stauffenberg and already owns two ranked wins against SDSU's 18th-ranked Alek Martin (10-4) and Maryland's 17th-ranked Ethen Miller (10-6). He is ranked as high as No. 5 nationally at 149 pounds.
• Senior/junior Jaden Bullock earned an 8-4 decision over Michigan State's 23rd-ranked Layne Malczewski last Sunday, scoring takedowns in the first and third periods and a reversal in the second. It was Bullock's sixth ranked win on the season and flipped two previous losses to the Spartan during the 2020-21 season -- 6-2 in the dual meeting and 6-5 at the Big Ten Championships at 174 pounds.
• Bullock surged in the national rankings after a 5-3 record and a sixth-place finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. He earned two ranked wins over the tournament -- a 4-3 decision against Ohio State's No. 8 Gavin Hoffman and a 9-6 decision against NC State's 20th-ranked Dylan Fishback. Bullock also earned a ranked win in the dual opener with a 9-5 decision over Columbia's No. 30 Aaron Ayzerov. He is 12-5 on the season and ranked as high as No. 13.
• Freshman Sergio Lemley also earned two wins over the weekend to stay unbeaten in dual competition at 141 pounds, cruising to a 19-4 technical fall over Maryland's Dario Lemus before using a late takedown to edge Michigan State's 33rd-ranked Jordan Hamdan, 4-1. Lemley opened the New Year by defeating SDSU's 14th-ranked Clay Carlson 6-4 -- for his best collegiate win to date. He is 11-3 this season and ranked as high as 24th nationally.
• The Wolverines are nationally ranked at all 10 weights. With the addition of Ragusin at 133 pounds, Michigan boasts seven in the top 10 according to InterMat: No. 5 DeAugustino (125), No. 6 Ragusin (133), No. 6 Gomez (149), No. 9 Will Lewan (157), No. 7 Cameron Amine (165), No. 4 Griffith (174) and No. 4 Davison (Hwt).
• The Nittany Lions are 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in Big Ten duals after defeating Indiana 46-0 in their conference opener last Sunday (Jan. 14). All 10 Penn State starters are ranked top-15 at their respective weight classes, including four No. 1-ranked wrestlers: Levi Haines (157 pounds), Carter Starocci (174), Aaron Brooks (197) and Greg Kerkvliet (Hwt). Michigan trails 35-24 in the all-time series against Penn State and has lost each of the last 11 meetings dating back to 2010, including a 30-8 decision on the road last season.
• The Scarlet Knights enter the weekend with a 9-1 dual record, including wins over Indiana (30-11, Jan. 12) and Purdue (26-13, Jan. 14) in their most-recent action. Seven Rutgers wrestlers are ranked at their respective weights, most notably No. 8 Dylan Shawver (133 pounds), No. 9 John Poznanski (197) and No. 7 Yaraslau Slavikouski (Hwt). Wolverines lead the all-time series against Rutgers 8-0 and posted a 24-9 victory last season in Piscataway.
